Saudi Arabian Energy Minister Khalid Al-Falih says the Kingdom has designs of becoming a major exporter of renewable energy, targeting the European market for starters.
If the region gets connected to Europe for example, then solar (power) that is produced in Saudi Arabia can be exported all the way to Europe through a network, Al-Kalif told the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos.
When its sunny in the region, its dark and cloudy sometimes in Europe So we can be a major exporter.
The projects are aimed to reach a capacity of 10 gigawatts by 2023 and will cost between US$30 and US$50 billion Al-Falih said, adding that they will include solar and wind power projects. Ten gigawatts is only the beginning, he said.

ALE Supports Saudi Push For Wind Power
Project cargo specialist ALE has transported one of the first wind turbine blades in Saudi Arabia, as part of the Saudi Vision 2030 strategy for renewable energy.
Saudi Arabia is expected to start issuing tenders for new wind projects in the next few weeks as part of an estimated US$30 billion to US$50 billion investment program, a strategy that is expected to drive significant breakbulk demand across the country.
These wind turbines will be the first ever to be constructed in the country. Making this a milestone project not only for ALE, but for Saudi Arabia, a spokesperson for ALE said.
State-run energy firm Saudi Aramco has already started work developing a number of wind farm project in partnership with GE. The first wind turbine in the country was commissioned this month in Turaif in northwestern Saudi Arabia, providing electricity directly to a Saudi Aramco bulk plant.

(14,572 posts)1. Interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if the US now begins a propaganda
campaign against the House of Saud and ends up forcing a regime change who will instead uphold US (read big gas and oil) interests.
We do have a history of that...
