Judge blocks hunt, restores protection of Greater Yellowstone grizzly bears

A U.S. District judge has blocked the first planned hunt for grizzly bears in the lower 48 states since the 1970s.

Judge Dana Christensen restored protection of "ursus horribilis" under the federal Endangered Species Act, protection that had been stripped away in August of 2017 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

A coalition of environmental and Native groups sued to block plans by Wyoming and Idaho to resume the killing of grizzlies.

Wyoming and Idaho had approved the taking of 23 bears, with a careful requirement that bears not be killed anyplace near a highway, where the hunt would be witnessed by tourists.
