Brazil withdraws candidacy to host climate change conference

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazil is withdrawing it candidacy to host a large conference on climate change next year.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Marco Bernardy said Wednesday that Brazil is withdrawing its candidacy to host the 2019 U.N. Climate Change Conference because of budget constraints.

However, environmental groups say the decision is a nod to President-elect Jair Bolsonaro, who promised during his campaign to pull Brazil out of the Paris Accord on climate change.

Bolsonaro has vowed to help Brazil’s mining and agribusiness companies expand their activities in protected areas, including Amazonian forests.

1. Despite the 'real' motivation (Bolsonaro) pretty much sucking, this is probably for the best

Brazil is, I'm quite sure, still paying for the Olympics, which cost that country a lot more than it could afford.

Probably best for the people there to avoid hosting large, expensive Int'l events of this nature for awhile.

It's not like it's not going to happen if it's not held in Brazil ...
