FEATURE-A new 'climate strike': Opting for no children as climate fears grow

LONDON, May 12 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - German schoolteacher Verena Brunschweiger decided shortly after her marriage not to have children - not because she did not want them but because she felt she could not justify the climate damage caused by adding to the planet's population.

She is part of a growing movement of women and young people who have vowed not to have a families out of concern about a looming climate change crisis.

"We really thought long and hard about this," Brunschweiger told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in a telephone interview from her home in Bavaria.

"Eventually the environment was the most important factor for me," she said. "I struggled, of course. We love children – my husband is also a teacher... But I'm certain I made the right decision."

will seek to adopt? So many children already here need loving homes...!

There's not only the issue of creating more humans on our over-capacity planet, but the heartbreak of bringing them up on an earth in crisis!

The Betsy DeVos crowd needs more children available for adoption. They desire more "white" children in the adoption pool. For Profit and getting a tax free status, the bestest world for rumpublicans.

There are plenty of children here already that needs a family.

Independently of each other, made the permanent decision. Their dad was really bummed, esp. since the boys decided without discussing it with him.

They were born 18 months apart, I got a tubal ligation soon after.

The generation in their twenties are not having children in order to spare them from climate disaster.

4 of the 6 have girlfriends/boyfriends (one is engaged actually), most of them long-term ... the oldest at 37 has has LOTS of girlfriends ... but not one is married, and not one has a child.

They're all pretty fiercely liberal, and I suspect their concern for the impact of additional people on the planet is playing into ALL their decisions about (not yet anyway) having kids.

My cousins (and the rest of my family) brought them all up right, to always consider the natural world in how they conduct their lives.

I've very proud of them

I'm in my 60s and other factors played into my decision to remain childless, but as climate change develops, I'm doubly glad of the path I took. Adding to the world's population is not on my conscience.

... or even a formal legal relationship.

I'm seeing a lot more of this than I recall from the century I was born into.
