I've been thinking about the Amazon for quite a while now-- it is a resource that should not...

belong to Brazil and a few other countries. It is central to the planet's workings, and really should be something like a UN protectorate. It is now a net polluter, not a sink, and this affects the planet.

Every nation, and many communities, have areas set aside as "commons" for the good of all. I am very familiar with Long Island Pine Barrens, similar to the upstate NY preserved land and the New Jersey Pine Barrens.

It's been nip and tuck all along, but we've got over 100,000 acres protecting the aquifer for over 2 million people. And protecting the wildlife that's lived there for millennia.

Now, a small area like this is tough enough for one state to pull off, so getting a nation and its neighbors to protect the Amazon is not easy. But, we have to start somewhere. Philippines, Indonesia, Southeast Asia, parts of Africa, large parts of India and China... No matter what we do to stop burning stuff, these areas make up for it in spades.

Somehow, we have to get the word out and get cooperation.

But how?
