https://www.commondreams.org/news/2022/10/21/uk-court-acquits-climate-scientists-who-glued-their-hands-government-buildingClimate action advocates around the world on Friday celebrated a London-based court's acquittal of five scientists who in April glued research and their own hands to a U.K. government building.
"With knowledge comes responsibility and more and more scientists are mobilizing in civil disobedience around the world as we are running out of time."

"The rush for new oil and gas being enabled by the U.K. government is completely at odds with what the scientific research is telling us needs to happen," defendant Stuart Capstick said Friday. "The consequences of ignoring that science will be devastating climate impacts that threaten the lives and well-being of people around the world."

So, it's okay if scientists do this to draw attention, but young climate activists.... well, according to a lot of people on DU they're mentally ill or terrorists.

At least, for me, that is not something I can support. Surly there are other ways of gaining attention. Which is what both groups are trying to do, to get people and governments to pay attention to climate issues.

(1,069 posts)They never harmed the artwork! They never planned to harm the art.
So, yes, you missed something! It is a concerted effort to dismiss this group as vandals or terrorists (according to some DUers).
But the truth is not so.
Here is their website which explains why they do what they do.

(1,069 posts)All I am asking is that you understand (hell, research it yourself) that the group of activists chose items to get in the media. Just like the scientists did when they glued themselves to a building.
So, stop spreading the lie that the protestors destroyed artwork, valuable or not...THEY DID NOT!!!!
No need to jump all over me. I should have just ignored the post (rather than try to discuss). Not in the mood for attack dogs today.
Bye!

(1,069 posts)I pointed out that what you said was wrong.
Instead of acknowledging you were wrong you have now doubled down on it and made it all about you.

(3,616 posts)I am extremely offended. I did not lie. I spoke about something that I saw with my own eyes. I don't give a flying you know what if the painting had a glass case. Cleaning the frame, replacing the glass, all that can damage the artwork.
What you are doing is alienating a SUPPORTER for the need to legislate for Climate Change. But I can't defend this action, and I won't.

(1,069 posts)I said you were promoting a lie - the one that said the activists were trying to destroy the artwork.
What did you see with your own eyes? The tomato soup on glass? Didn't hurt the artwork at all.
I used to work as an art handler at a major art museum so don't try to use that shit as an excuse.
We are way past looking for votes to maybe get to a legislative change that maybe gets to a bill which maybe will become a law that maybe will change behaviors of corporations and people...maybe.
You are afraid for one painting that is not even shown to have been damaged at all ... yet show no concern for the millions of people being displaced/will be displaced and die, and all of the animals and insects that are now disappearing at alarming rates in the 6th Extinction.
Your concern is noted.

(3,616 posts)I won't participate further. Alienated right out the door. Good luck with that campaign. It will need it. I don't see it changing many hearts and minds.
