South Korea may reconsider scientific whaling plans

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-18808105

South Korea has said it may reverse a controversial plan to resume whaling for "scientific research" if other options to study the mammals were available.

An official said on Wednesday that the country may consider other ways to study whales without killing them.

South Korea had cited scientific research rules last week as a reason to restart whaling.

But critics say the move was simply commercial whaling in disguise.

Seoul not to go ahead on whaling: Carr
Date July 12, 2012 - 5:10PM

Australia's Foreign Affairs Minister Bob Carr has been told that South Korea is not going ahead with scientific whaling.

Senator Carr held talks on whaling today with the Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan, at today's East Asia Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Mr Kim told Senator Carr that Korea would take the advice of the International Whaling Commission on the subject, indicating that plans for scientific whaling would not proceed, Senator Carr said in a statement.

Senator Carr praised the leadership of the Republic of Korea in making this decision.
