"For the study, the researchers investigated the impact of ground squirrels in the Arctic region. They studied underground burrows of the squirrels in Siberia.
The researchers found that the carbon cycle increased the soil temperature where the arctic ground squirrels lived.
The researchers also found that the nitrogen that squirrels were adding to the ground through their waste was having an impact. The nitrogen feeds the microbes in the soil which increase the amount of carbon dioxide and methane that is released into the atmosphere.
"They are soil engineers. They break down the soil when they are digging their burrows, they mix the top layer with the bottom layer, they are bringing oxygen to the soil and they are fertilizing the soil with their urine and their feces," said Nigel Golden, a research technician at the University of Wisconsin."
