World Catholic leaders appeal for bold climate change agreement

VATICAN CITY | BY PHILIP PULLELLA

Roman Catholic leaders from around the world made an unprecedented joint appeal on Monday to a forthcoming U.N. conference on climate change to produce "a truly transformational" agreement to stem global warming.

The Catholic cardinals, patriarchs and bishops signed the appeal in the Vatican, saying climate change had to address social justice and that any agreement must be fair and ensure the poor and most vulnerable were not sold short.

Their 10-point document was based on Pope Francis's landmark encyclical last June, called "Laudato Si", which demanded urgent action to save the planet from environmental ruin.

It again put the 1.2 billion-member Catholic Church in the front line of the debate over the causes of climate change, an active role that some Catholic conservatives, including U.S. Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush, have criticized.

The document said "reliable scientific evidence" suggests global warming is the result of "unrestrained human activity", current models of progress and development, and excessive reliance on fossil fuels. Climate change skeptics argue that man's role in global warming has not been conclusively proved.

Especially because I believe there is nothing we can do at this point to avert a catastrophic outcome.

My hope is that someone will listen to the evidence and then say to their partner, "You know honey, maybe bringing another child into what's coming isn't such a great idea after all..."

the Church could get behind zero pop growth?
the Church could set an example by tossing out their OWN ancient ideologies?
... but they won't -- they're self-serving hypocrites too.

that just because Christians believe that we have some where to go after this doesn't mean we want to shit on the Earth God gave us. It reminds me of when an atheist says they don't need religion to be moral, except a christian has even more motivation ( if they needed it)to preserve our planet because we're taught along with love that we have to hope for redemption for every human. We need more time here on earth . We need to preserve our planet as long as we possibly can By most means possible. It's a great selling point to Christians , It helped me bridge who I was. I've given this alot of thought because when you become an environmentalist you almost can't help but human loathe and as a christian your taught to love every one, as God loves us personally. They seem like they're in direct contrast with each other , They're not. I think as a human race we should fight for Time, for our mother earth as we know her and for us . I read once that humans fight like the devil when thier backs are against the wall, and we may have well, screwed the pooch I still think we should fight for as much time as we can possibly get and remember no one was promised a damn thing. I have 3 children 21, 17, and 14, not that's an excuse but had no idea that the hour was so late, when I had them( lack of access to the information high way 20 years ago), My love for them transcends any belief I hold. I would simply give any thing my life , my soul , my death , worldly possessions, every thing for one more day , one more week , one more month, year ...you get the idea even if I put them in Gods hands, I want to give them time. It's a battle cry that has nothing to do with sex, creed , race or religion.

Does Catholic has any influence to enforce its appeal? Environment has mostly suffered due to the greed of the big corporation heads. Like oil cartels killed electric cars many years back.
