Japanese lawmakers are fighting for peace — literally.

A wild melee broke out on the usually dignified parliament floor Thursday when a marathon debate over the nation’s security pending bills took a violent turn.

Legislators climbed over their desks, exchanged punches and clobbered together in a giant pile in the middle of the Thursday night debate session.

Parliament was debating a controversial bill that would allow Japan’s military to defend its allies, even when Japan isn’t directly under attack. Since World War II, the country has maintained a tradition of pacifism and reserved its military force strictly for self-defense.
