Scores of Bodies From South Sudan Gunfire, Juba Doctor Says

Soldiers have brought scores of bodies to a hospital in South Sudan's capital after gunfire erupted throughout Juba on Friday evening, a doctor at the hospital said Saturday.

The doctor said a total count of the dead was not available because soldiers were not allowing doctors to examine the bodies, but he said the morgue was full at Juba Teaching Hospital.

It was the first word of deaths from Friday's violence. The majority of the bodies were of soldiers, the doctor said. He insisted on speaking on condition of anonymity because of fears for his safety.

The gunfire began outside the presidential compound as President Salva Kiir was meeting with first vice president and former rebel leader Riek Machar and soon spread through the city.

South Sudan's capital calm after two days of gunbattles: witness

South Sudan's capital Juba was quiet but tense on Saturday, a Reuters witness and an aid worker said, after two days of gunbattles between rival troops that have raised fears for a fragile peace process.

Africa's newest nation is emerging from two years of civil war. On Friday, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the latest violence was an illustration of lack of commitment to the peace process and urged the country's leaders to end the fighting, discipline military leaders and work together to implement the peace deal.

After shootouts on Thursday and Friday, a Reuters witness said on Saturday there were still road blocks on some Juba streets, heavy movement of military vehicles and that most businesses were shuttered. He said he had seen the bodies of at least three soldiers.

At least five soldiers were killed on Thursday.

"It seems as though things have certainly calmed from what they were last night, however the situation is still very, very tense," Jeremiah Young, an aid worker with World Vision, said.

1. South Sudan: More than 250 dead as violence breaks out in capital of Juba

Hundreds of troops and dozens of civilians have died amid intensifying gun battles in the South Sudanese capital of Juba, which have forced residents to seek shelter at a UN base.

Fighting broke out on Thursday between troops loyal to President Salva Kiir and those loyal to Vice President Riek Machar, and have continued through to Sunday morning.

Many civilians have been forced to flee their homes to escape the violence, which has also hit a UN camp for displaced people sheltering from the violence.

"The condition is really very bad. We have a lot of casualties this side, I think around 50 to 60 besides those of yesterday," said Budbud Chol who oversees security at a clinic in the base. "We have civilian casualties. We have rocket-propelled grenades that have landed in the camp which has wounded eight people." Among the wounded are five children and two women while the rest were men, he said.
