LONDON Liz Truss became Britain's third female prime minister after Monday's announcement by the ruling Conservative Party that she would replace Boris Johnson.
Truss, 47, has portrayed herself as the political heir to Margaret Thatcher, Britain's formidable cheerleader for free markets and low taxes, a strong supporter of the Anglo-American alliance and a dynamo who played a key role in ending the Cold War. Johnson, an architect of Britain's exit from the European Union (known as Brexit), held the role for just over three years before resigning amid scandals over breaking his own coronavirus lockdown rules.
Truss was foreign secretary in Johnson's government.

New UK leader vows to tackle energy crisis, ailing economy
LONDON (AP) Liz Truss became U.K. prime minister on Tuesday and immediately faced up to the enormous tasks ahead of her: curbing soaring prices, boosting the economy, easing labor unrest and fixing a national health care system burdened by long waiting lists and staff shortages.
At the top of her inbox is the energy crisis triggered by Russias invasion of Ukraine, which threatens to push energy bills to unaffordable levels, shuttering businesses and leaving the nations poorest people shivering at home this winter.
In a break between downpours that drenched central London, Truss said she would cut taxes to spur economic growth, bolster the National Health Service and deal hands on with the energy crisis, though she offered few details about how she would implement those policies. She is expected to unveil her plans on Thursday.
British news media reported that Truss plans to cap energy bills. The cost to taxpayers of that step could reach 100 billion pounds ($116 billion).
