Russia formally leaves the ECHR, which still has more than 17,400 complaints outstanding

Russia has formally disassociated itself this Friday from the European Convention on Human Rights and, by extension, from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which still has 17,450 complaints against the Russian state on the table.

The Council of Europe decided to remove Russia in mid-March, in retaliation for the military offensive launched on Ukraine just weeks earlier, but a six-month deadline was set for the final exit from the Convention.

The ECHR will remain competent to examine complaints of alleged abuses until Friday, although historically the Russian authorities have ignored the condemnatory judgments issued by the Strasbourg-based court.

The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejcinovic Buric, regretted that "more than 140 million Russian citizens" will now be left without the "protection" of the European framework for human rights issues. "Russia will further isolate itself from the democratic world," she said in a statement.
