President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Ukraine guarantees captured Russian soldiers civilised treatment, confidentiality with regard to the circumstances of their surrender, and the opportunity not to return to Russia.
Quote: "Ukraine guarantees every Russian soldier who surrenders three things:
you will be treated in a civilised manner, in accordance with all conventions;
no one will know the circumstances of your surrender, no one in Russia will know that your surrender was voluntary;
if you are afraid to return to Russia and do not want an exchange, we will find a way to ensure this as well."
He emphasised that Russian commanders do not care about the lives of Russians - they just need to fill the empty spaces left by the dead, wounded, those who fled or those who were captured. And those spaces can be filled with "either young IT specialists who have not served [in the army] at all, or pensioners who served only in the Soviet army.
So, now is the key moment for all of you: right now it is being decided whether your life will end or not. It is better not to take a conscription letter than to die in a foreign land as a war criminal. It is better to run away from criminal mobilisation than to be crippled and then bear responsibility in the court for participating in the war of aggression. It is better to surrender to Ukrainian captivity than to be killed by the strikes of our weapons, absolutely fair strikes, as Ukraine defends itself in this war," the president emphasised.

Zelenskyy urges Russian conscripts to 'sabotage' military operations and offers protections to those who surrender: 'It is better to surrender to Ukrainian captivity than to be killed by the strikes of our weapons'
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is moving to overtake Russia from the inside out.
Russia's seven-month effort to conquer its neighbor, Ukraine, has recently been marked by a partial military mobilization, the country's first since World War II, NBC News reported.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's mobilization effort impacts 300,000 reservists many of whom are going to great lengths to avoid being drafted. Some have even headed to the border, despite facing up to 10 years in prison for desertion.
In a video address late on Friday Ukraine time, Zelenskyy said he seeks to "sabotage" Russia's unprovoked efforts to conquer the country.

(6,688 posts)Desperation from a nuclear power is the worst part for Europe and the rest of the world. The desperation sure appears to be getting more intense daily. Russians are fleeing in droves. Sanctions are hurting everyone in all income levels...why, what could go wrong?

Vladimir Putin has taken to comparing himself to some of his czarist predecessors, invoking their military triumphs. In June, he praised Peter the Great for taking back and reinforcing territory in the Baltics in the Great Northern War in the 18th century.
But as Putins effort to conquer parts of Ukraine slogs into its sixth month, some historians feel he more closely resembles Nicholas II, whose 1904-1905 war against Japan was an unmitigated disaster.
The parallels between the two conflicts are undeniable. Just as Nicholas underestimated his Japanese adversary, so did Putin, who was convinced that his invasion of Ukraine would be a walkover.
