The White House believes that more than 20,000 Russian combatants have died in the battle for the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut in the last five months.
A further 80,000 have been wounded, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said, citing newly declassified intelligence.
Half of the dead are from the Wagner private mercenary company, the US says.
If accurate, the number of Russian casualties outweighs the eastern city's pre-war population of about 70,000.
Moscow has been trying to take Bakhmut since last year in a grinding war of attrition.

(7,839 posts)Russian population would be aghast at 100k total casualties in 5 months in a single battle
if they ever heard such a thing it could cause political chaos!
What does the Ukrainian Army estimate since they the ones doing the actual killing?

(22,133 posts)teams quite a bit (and other wrestling too, competitive sports), and you wouldn't know it if you didn't know you were watching Russian videos or not (on YouTube). All young boys, wrestling, just like here in the U.S., a horrible crime against the Russian people. I hope to Gosh that they do something about Putin and his thugs, and do something. No wonder that there are stirrings over there, some discord among the people over there. Another thing to watch if you are FYI, are the trains in Russia.
Such a terrible human tragedy on all sides. Putin must face a war crimes tribunal. He must. Either that, or he'll finally drop dead from whatever ailment that he is suffering from (cancer, from what I hear, treatment not effective, if anything, the treatment is pretty toxic too).
