Manipur violence: Dozens dead as ethnic clashes grip Indian state

At least 30 people have been killed in ethnic clashes in the remote Indian state of Manipur, officials say.

The violence began earlier this week after a rally by indigenous communities against moves to grant tribal status to the main ethnic group in the state.

Mobs attacked homes, vehicles, churches, and temples. Some reports put the death toll as high as 54.

Around 10,000 people have reportedly been displaced. Thousands of troops have been sent in to maintain order.

54 Dead After Ethnic Clashes in India's Remote Northeast

IMPHAL, INDIA — The death toll after ethnic clashes in India's remote northeast rose to 54 on Saturday, with fresh violence overnight despite authorities rushing in troops to restore order.

Thousands of soldiers were sent to Manipur state after a protest march by a tribal group turned violent Wednesday.

Authorities imposed an internet blackout and issued shoot-on-sight orders in "extreme cases" in an effort to contain the unrest.

The situation remained tense after a fresh bout of violence Friday night, hours after the state's top police officer warned that rioters had stolen arms and ammunition from police stations.
