Expat Syrians join the crush to support Assad in 'parody election'

Thousands of Syrians desperate to vote for Bashar al-Assad swamped their embassy in Lebanon on Wednesday, taking part in a chaotic voting day for expatriates in an election described by the West as “a parody of democracy”.

Traffic came to a standstill, blocking roads for miles around, as crowds made their way to join the bottleneck of thousands of voters at the embassy entrance in Yarzeh, just south of Beirut.

Presidential elections are set to take place in Syria on June 3, with Mr Assad running against Hassan el-Nuri or Maher al-Hajjar, two little-known MPs, who are not thought to have a chance of winning.

When asked to name the candidates, one voter could only successfully name one and described another as “that guy from Aleppo”, referring to Mr Hajjar.
