Pussy Riot jailed for six more months

Miriam Elder in Moscow
guardian.co.uk, Friday 20 July 2012 16.45 BST

A Moscow judge has ordered three members of the feminist punk band Pussy Riot to spend the next six months in jail, prolonging a case that has highlighted the crackdown on freedom of expression in Vladimir Putin's Russia.

The three women – Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Yekaterina Samutsevich and Maria Alekhina – were remanded in custody until January 2013. They have been in jail since their arrest in March after performing an anti-Putin "punk prayer" in Moscow's most important church, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.

Their supporters say the powerful Orthodox church, which has close links with Putin, is behind the drive to keep the women in jail. Top church officials have come out in favour of their incarceration. They face up to seven years in prison on charges of hooliganism.

2. It seems you've just made THREE serious assumptions made all too often, how sad.

First, that somebody "gave" this group the name.

Second, the the name is objectively "disgusting", I disagree.

Third, you seem to fail in considering that they might have selected the name deliberately for effect; that they are somehow victims.

(I hope I'm not reading too much into your curt reply)

I think it's always sad when individuals make such assumptions.

Pussy Riot
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pussy Riot is a Russian feminist punk-rock collective that stages politically provocative impromptu performances in Moscow, on subjects such as the status of women in Russia, and most recently against the election campaign of Prime Minister Putin for president of Russia.

Their usual costume is skimpy dresses and tights, even in bitterly cold weather, with their faces masked by brightly colored luchador inspired balaclavas, both while performing and giving interviews, for which they always use pseudonyms. The collective is made up of about 10 performers, and about 15 people who handle the technical work of shooting and editing their videos, which are posted to the Internet.[1][2] The group cites punk rock and Oi! bands Angelic Upstarts, Cockney Rejects, Sham 69, Era and The 4-Skins as its most important musical inspiration.[3][4]

The band also mentions American punk rock band Bikini Kill and the Riot grrrl movement of the 1990s as an inspiration in an interview by The St. Petersburg Times. “What we have in common is impudence, politically loaded lyrics, the importance of feminist discourse and a non-standard female image,” Pussy Riot said.[5]

I, for one, love Pussy Riot.

5. I see what you mean and felt that you'd feel differently upon second thought.

I sort of savor in groups or individuals that challenge convention with good ends, and who can do it effectively.

Not so much if it's for commercial ends, but I don't think it is here.
