Report: Denmark set to label settlement produce

Denmark is set to introduce a labeling system to denote products made in Israeli settlements, Danish media said Friday.

"This is a move that will clearly show consumers that this produce has been produced under conditions that not only the Danish government, but also the European governments have rejected," Danish Foreign Minister Villy Sovndal was quoted as saying by Danish online news-site Politken.

"Then it is up to consumers whether they are prepared to buy the produce," he added.

The Danish FM said that stricter controls and labeling of settlement produce should be seen as part of the European Union's support for a two state solution.

Four Islamic terror suspects planned to attack an event attended by Denmark's Crown prince to kill "as many as possible" in revenge for a Danish newspaper's publication of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad, prosecutors alleged yesterday.

--

The terror suspects are accused of planning to carry out indiscriminate gun attacks in order to avenge Denmark's refusal to ban the publication satirical cartoons mocking the founder of Islam in 2005.

Mr Plaehn also accused the four men, charged with terrorism and illegal possession of weapons of having links with Pakistan, an allegation, he said, would be proved during the trial which is expected to finish in mid-June.

The men – Munir Awad, Omar Abdalla Aboelazm, Mounir Ben Mohamed Dhahri and Sabhi Ben Mohamed Zalouti – are originally from Libya, Tunisia, Morocco and Lebanon.

three are Swedish citizens and one is a Swedish resident .

And you would think with all thats going on there, they would have more to worry about than a few bananas and a bunch of mangoes.

Besides...apparently Gaza has no problem with the fruit.

Fruit exports to Gaza rise 25%

According to the association’s chairman, Ilan Eshel, Israeli farmers transferred 50,000 tons of fruit into Gaza in 2010. The main produce sold to Gaza are bananas, apples, mangoes, dates and avocados.

Eshel said that the increased sales were the result of the relative calm that prevails in the region and the positive actions taken by Maj.-Gen. Eitan Dangot, the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, and his staff, who show great understanding of the needs of both sides.

“Trade relations between Israeli farmers and Gaza merchants are excellent,” said Eshel. “Some of the merchants enter Israel regularly to assess the produce and close deals, and we also hold meetings with them at the Erez crossing.”

South Africa is also following suit

The South African Trade and Industry Minister's decision to mark products from the settlements did not surprise factory owners in the West Bank, who are accustomed by now to boycott attempts; however, some of them are concerned that the current move will be followed by other countries, potentially leading to substantial damages for them and for their employees.

Ironically, those who would get harmed the most by the move are some 15,000 Palestinian workers who are employed in these factories and depend on them to make a living.

"Of course I am worried, but first and foremost I am concerned about my workers, who will be the first to get hit; there are thousands of employees here that are getting conditions that they won't get anywhere else in the Palestinian Authority, and if costs are cut because of the boycott, they will be the first to get fired," said a manager of a factory located in a Jewish settlement in the West Bank.

The manager noted that he successfully handled boycott attempts in the past, but this time the situation is more worrisome: "They always make it difficult for us, and up until now the workers couldn’t care less; ideology is a nice thing, but eventually economic interests prevail. This time we must stop the title wave.

now this leads to some questions are only Palestinians employed at this factory or will they simply be the first laid off in some sort of 'price tag' move?

also this is not a boycott simply accurate labeling
