(30,099 posts)Although she expressed support for Israel's right to defend itself against rocket fire, Albright said in an interview with CNN that the "question of proportionality" was important.
"I do think that it is very hard to watch the number of Palestinians that have been killed innocents," Albright said as the current secretary of state, John Kerry, was in the region to attempt to broker a cease-fire.
"It is hard to dispute the fact that, as Prime Minister Netanyahu has said, that in fact there are innocents that have been put in the way in order to act as shields," she said. "But the bottom line is, I think, that this is hurting Israel's moral authority. I do think that it looks as though they are overdoing."

Undersecretary of the Ministry of Endowments in Gaza, Hassan al-Saifi, said over 50 mosques have been targeted.

Ive already raised the white flag. Ive stopped searching the dictionary for the word to describe half of a boys missing head while his father screams Wake up, wake up, I bought you a toy! How did Angela Merkel, the chancellor of Greater Germany, put it? Israels right to defend itself.
m still struggling with the need to share details of the endless number of talks Ive had with friends in Gaza, in order to document what its like to wait for your turn in the slaughterhouse. For example, the talk I had on Saturday morning with J. from al-Bureij refugee camp, while he was on his way to Dir al-Balah with his wife. Theyre about 60-years-old. That morning, his aging mother got a phone call, and heard the recording instructing the residents of their refugee camp to leave for Dir al-Balah.
A book on Israeli military psychology should have an entire chapter devoted to this sadism, sanctimoniously disguising itself as mercy: A recorded message demanding hundreds of thousands of people leave their already targeted homes, for another place, equally dangerous, 10 kilometers away. What, I asked J., youre leaving? What, why? He said, We have a hut near the beach, with some land and cats. Were going to feed the cats and come back. Were going together. If the car gets blown up, well die together.
If I were wearing an analysts hat, I would write: In contrast to the common Israeli hasbara, Hamas isnt forcing Gazans to remain in their homes, or to leave. Its their decision. Where would they go? If were going to die, its more dignified to die at home, instead of while running away, says the downright secular J. Im still convinced that one sentence like this is worth a thousand analyses. But when it comes to Palestinians, most readers prefer the summaries.

Millions of Israeli citizens, many of whom are children, have been living under the threat of rocket fire for more than two weeks. For hundreds of thousands of Israelis living in the south of the country, this terrible situation is part of an ongoing routine. The unrelenting attacks have disrupted their lives, denied their right to live in security and hurt their ability to make a living. Every venture outside to work, school, or a recreational activity is attended by a sense of danger. Some residents have even decided to relocate for fear they or their loved ones would get hurt.

Deliberate targeting of civilians by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups defies humanity and is morally and legally reprehensible.

Hopes that the invasion by Israeli Defense Forces would swiftly end the tit-for-tat aerial exchange of Palestinian rockets and Israeli missiles look to have been dashed as gaps between the sides remain wide.
Hamas strategy seems to be to suck Israeli forces into a situation where their numerical and qualitative advantages are neutralized, by tunneling into areas where they can attack or laying various traps, said Chris Doyle, director of the Council for Arab-British Understanding. It is trying to conduct a classic urban guerrilla conflict for which it has no doubt been preparing for some time.

Now joining us to discuss the situation is Vijay Prashad. He's the Edward Said Chair at the American University of Beirut. His most recent book is The Poorer Nations: A Possible History of the Global South.
Thanks for joining us, Vijay.
VIJAY PRASHAD, EDWARD SAID CHAIR, AMERICAN UNIVERSITY OF BEIRUT: Thank you for having me.
WORONCZUK: So, Vijay, let's talk about the extent to which this operation against Gaza has occurred. I mean, one might think that after the international condemnation of Operation Cast Lead in 2008 and 2009 and the relatively smaller operation against Gaza in Operation Pillar of Cloud, one might think that the Israelis would avoid such a wide-scale operation against Gaza and causes so many civilian deaths.
PRASHAD: Well, I'm not sure there was actually international condemnation. After Operation Cast Lead, the United Nations impaneled a very important commission headed by Sir Richard Goldstone, the South African jurist. The report that was produced by this commission basically suggested that there needs to be a little more investigation, but in all likelihood, Israel had committed war crimes against the people of Gaza. There was intense diplomatic pressure by the Israelis and by the United States. You Know, thanks to the WikiLeaks cache, we know that the United States envoys around the world lobbied countries--I looked at the India section very closely--they lobbied countries to make sword the Goldstone Report was basically put on a shelf in the UN library. Mr. Goldstone felt so much pressure himself that he recanted from what he had put his name to. So if in a situation where Israel has had evidence, and evidence trail showing possibilities of crimes against humanity, if they could get away with that, why would Israel feel any sense of accountability or obligation to the truth? It can continue to prosecute a war with impunity.

Khan Younis, Gaza Abed Akara fled his house near Gaza's southeastern border with Israel on Friday, the morning after Israel launched a ground operation here. When he saw the tanks advancing and shelling homes, he gathered his wife and eight children and they ran for their lives.
He can't go home, nor does he know if he will have a home left to return to. Yet Mr. Akara says that if he could choose between an immediate stop to the killing and continued resistance by Hamas in order to wring cease-fire concessions from Israel, the choice is simple: war.
Many Palestinians in Gaza appear to agree with Akara. That apparent willingness to endure a longer war as Hamas battles a much stronger enemy is a powerful indication of how desperate many have become over the past year in this coastal enclave, particularly after Egypt closed its border with Gaza.

The European Aviation Safety Agency late Tuesday said it "strongly recommends" that airlines refrain from operating flights to and from Tel Aviv. It said it would "monitor the situation and advise on any update as the situation develops."
EASA acted after the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration prohibited American-based airlines from flying to the airport following a Hamas rocket explosion nearby. The FAA was expected to issue a new statement later Wednesday.

While pressing a 15-day-old offensive, Israel scrambled to contain economic damage from a halt of flights to Tel Aviv's main airport by U.S. and European airlines spooked by the long-range rocket salvoes of Hamas and other Gaza Strip guerrillas.
Adding to pressure on Israel, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said there was "a strong possibility" that it was committing war crimes in Gaza, where 668 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have died in the fighting.
Israel denied the suggestion, stepping up the war of words and accusing Hamas of using fellow Gazans as human shields.

Offering the first glimmer of hope for a Gaza cease-fire, the United States on Wednesday said negotiations to broker a truce between Israel and Hamas militants are making some progress even if an end to more than two weeks of bloodshed is nowhere near.
"We certainly have made steps forward," U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said in Jerusalem, where he met for the second time this week with United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon. "There's still work to be done."
He did not offer any specifics about the progress he cited in his third day of talks with Mideast leaders. He was in Jerusalem shortly after landing in Tel Aviv on an Air Force jet one day after the Federal Aviation Administration banned commercial flights into Ben-Gurion Airport because of a Hamas rocket attack nearby.
White House deputy national security adviser Tony Blinken said there must be a way forward that does not involve Hamas having the ability to "rain down rockets on Israeli civilians."

Latest Update: 07.23.14, 13:09 / Israel News
US Secretary of State John Kerry said negotiations toward a cease-fire agreement in the Gaza Strip are making some progress after days of a deadly impasse between Israel and Hamas militants.
His arrivial in Israel came after the Palestinian decision-making body led by US-backed President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday endorsed demands by Hamas for halting Gaza hostilities with Israel, a closing of ranks that may help Egyptian-mediated truce efforts.
With Israeli and US encouragement, Egypt has tried to get both sides to hold fire and then negotiate terms for protracted calm in the Palestinian enclave where officials said 624 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in 15 days of fighting.
Making an unannounced, one-day visit, Kerry was due to see Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, signalling an intensification of efforts to end the bloodshed.
"We have certainly made some steps forward. There is still work to be done," Kerry said shortly after arriving.

(90,061 posts)The Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday for the second day in a row warned airlines against flying into Israels only international airport due to security concerns. This has one Republican senator demanding answers and promoting a fact-free conspiracy theory that says the Obama administration is using the FAA to launch a unilateral economic boycott of Israel.
A rocket launched from the Gaza Strip on Tuesday landed perilously close to Ben-Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv. This incident prompted a slew of airlines to announce that they were cancelling flights to Israel until the situation had calmed down some. The FAA soon thereafter announced that it was issuing a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) to U.S.-based airlines, informing them that they were banned from flying into Ben Gurion due to potentially hazardous situation created by the armed conflict in Israel and Gaza. The last time the FAA made such a choice regarding Israel was in 1991, when the country was hit with SCUD missiles fired from Iraq.
That decision was renewed for a further twenty-four hours on Wednesday, and it was here that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) began to become suspicious. Because just prior to the FAA announcement, the Weekly Standard had wondered why the State Department had chosen to issue a travel warning for Americans going to Israel. Israel earned over $10 billion last year from 3.5 million visitors, the plurality of whom were Americans, article asked. Coming at the height of summer tourism season, States warning could cost Israel many millions of dollars in lost revenue.
So why did the State Department issue this warning not when long-range rocket fire was a more serious threat, but only yesterday, days after such fire had decreased sharply, and coinciding with [Secretary of State John Kerry's] trip to the region? it continued.

(90,061 posts)(Reuters) - The Israeli military said on Wednesday it had detained several soldiers and a civilian on suspicion of leaking Gaza casualty figures over social media before families of the dead or wounded could be formally informed.
A week into ground fighting with Hamas that has killed at least 32 soldiers, some Israelis complain of first learning their relatives were dead through WhatsApp, or of being misled by erroneous messages into believing they were among the toll.
The phenomenon has led to front-page calls by Israeli commentators to stop the relaying of unauthorised casualty updates. Hoping to control the information, the army has confiscated the cellphones of troops sent into combat.
"Notifying a family of a soldier or officer who was killed in action is one of the most sensitive and well-planned procedures that exists in the military, as befits such a serious moment," the military said in a statement announcing the arrests following an investigation that it described has having employed "both open-source and undercover means".

(90,061 posts)WASHINGTON, July 23 (Reuters) - More than 50 former Israeli soldiers have refused to serve in the nation's reserve force, citing regret over their part in a military they said plays a central role in oppressing Palestinians, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday.
"We found that troops who operate in the occupied territories aren't the only ones enforcing the mechanisms of control over Palestinian lives. In truth, the entire military is implicated. For that reason, we now refuse to participate in our reserve duties, and we support all those who resist being called to service," the soldiers wrote in a petition posted online and first reported by the newspaper.
While some Israelis have refused to serve in the Palestinian territories of the West Bank, the military's structure is such that serving in any capacity forces one to play a role in the conflict, said the soldiers, most of whom are women who would have been exempted from combat.
"Many of us served in logistical and bureaucratic support roles; there, we found that the entire military helps implement the oppression of the Palestinians," they said.

(90,061 posts)Israel has sent troops into Gaza City to blow up terrorist tunnels, at heavy cost. What puzzles one expert is why the IDF hasnt instead used technology to find the tunnels, just as it has exploited high-tech capabilities for the conflicts greatest success Iron Dome.
Paul Bauman, a Canadian who is one of the worlds foremost experts on discovering underground tunnels and voids, insists that the technology exists and has been used in the US, Canada, Korea, and other places. We actually did some work with the IDF some years ago, showing them how the technology weve developed works, Bauman told The Times of Israel in an interview. They were interested, but there was no follow-up. Why, I couldnt say.
The IDF said it could not comment on the matter.
Had the army worked with Bauman, using the sophisticated methods he has developed and successfully employed over the past decade, things might have been different. While there is no foolproof, single tech solution to discovering tunnels, a combination of several techniques radar, tomography, and seismic measuring could give Israel a technological advantage over Hamas, creating a map of what is happening under the surface, and making it much easier to find tunnels and the terrorists who dig them.

Without a diplomatic maneuver alongside the ground maneuver being performed by the IDF, the battle against Hamas will not end in the near future. Even if a ceasefire is reached in the coming days, it will reflect the absence of a real military victory and will set the stopwatch in motion ahead of the next conflict.
Clearly, Israel has an immensely greater military force and endurance than Hamas. The home front is willing to pay the price so that the rocket problem will be solved in the long run, the Iron Dome system is doing an excellent job, contributing to the public's stamina, the operation aimed at destroying the offensive tunnels is extremely crucial, and the political and security echelons have so far been exercising the caution required while fighting in such a complex arena.

(30,099 posts)Talks to end the 16-day conflict have intensified with US Secretary of State John Kerry shuttling between Jerusalem and Cairo in a bid to forge a truce.
Hamas had earlier rejected an Egyptian proposal that called for a ceasefire first and then negotiations, highlighting that they had not been shown the agreement beforehand. Israel, which had accepted the truce, subsequently expanded its assault in response.
The Hamas official acknowledged that the militants realized that getting Israel to end the eight-year siege in tandem with a ceasefire was unrealistic.

In the third week of a bruising conflict between Israel and Hamas, there were some positive signs as the intensity of the fighting seemed to dip a bit even as diplomatic efforts ramped up.
The number of Israeli airstrikes took a precipitous drop, the Israeli military reported Thursday.
Israel Defense Forces said it hit 35 terror targets overnight. A day earlier, the number was 187.
The Israeli military also reported a sharp fall in the number of rockets fired from Gaza in the early hours of Thursday, although as the day wore on, more rockets were lofted toward Israel, some in the direction of the international airport in Tel Aviv.

The Foreign Press Association in Israel has condemned deliberate official and unofficial incitement against journalists working to cover the fighting between Israel and the Gaza Strip.
In a statement released Wednesday, the organization stated that forcible attempts had been made to prevent journalists and TV crews from performing their news assignments, including outright attacks.
One incident described by the FPA was an attack on BBC Arabic reporter Firas Khatib, whilst he was delivering a live feed from the Israeli side of the border. On a YouTube video of the incident, a man can be seen pouncing on Khatib and heard yelling son of a whore.

(30,099 posts)Israeli ground troops had already entered Gaza when Meretz Party Chairwoman Zehava Gal-On was asked by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu what she would do in his place. She immediately answered that she would never have gotten into this situation in the first place, because she would have given the Palestinian unity government a chance. She believes that if that had happened, the current escalation could have been avoided.
The meeting between Netanyahu and the left-wing Meretz Party leader, who's calling for a unilateral cease-fire with Hamas, took place July 18. All in all, the mood was friendly. The meeting was intended to update Gal-On about the current situation, something which Netanyahu, as the prime minister, is not obligated to do. Nevertheless, despite all the security issues on his desk, Netanyahu set aside time that morning to meet with the other leaders of the opposition parties, including Gal-On, Shas Party Chairman Arieh Deri and Kadima Party Chairman Shaul Mofaz. By meeting with them, Netanyahu apparently wanted to bolster the political consensus about the ground incursion into Gaza, even among the opposition parties.
The previous two Meretz leaders, Yossi Beilin and Chaim Oron, stood by the government from the depth of the opposition and supported the ground assault. Beilin did so during Ehud Olmert's tenure as prime minister for the Second Lebanon War in 2006. Oron (Jumes) supported Ehud Olmert during Operation Cast Lead in 2008. But Gal-On refused to grant similar backing. True, in the early days of the operation she praised the prime minister to the media for his moderate security approach.
In a conversation with Al-Monitor, she reiterated what she told Netanyahu: 'Mr. Prime Minister,' I said, 'I would not have reached this point, because I would have embarked on a diplomatic process with the Palestinians. I would have carried through with the fourth prisoner release.' I emphasized that hes about to make a big mistake by launching a ground operation, and I said to him, There are two reasons that you are about to enter Gaza. The first is Hamas, and the second is [Ministers] Bennett and Liberman. You failed to stand up to their pressure.

It is the fourth time that a UN school has been hit in Israel's offensive against Hamas militants.
In the past 16 days of fighting, more than 750 Palestinians and 33 Israelis have been killed, officials say.
Pools of blood
Earlier on Thursday, UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos said that it was "vital" to have a ceasefire as more than 118,000 people were now sheltering in UN schools and people were running out of food.

Israel's Operation Protective Edge entered its 17th day on Thursday, marking the 7th day of the IDF's ground incursion into the Gaza Strip.
The Palestinian death toll since Israel launched Operation Protective Edge surpassed the 770 mark, most of them since Israel entered Gaza a week ago.
Israel military fatalities stand at 32 since the operation commenced. 134 soldiers are currently hospitalized due to wounds incurred in the fighting, and one soldier is missing. The IDF has not announced the loss of any soldiers since Wednesday.
Israel asserted Thursday that the hospital it struck the day before was empty of patients and being used for missile attacks, while Palestinians asserted that 15 people were killed when a UNRWA school was hit by artillery fire on Thursday.
While U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was in Egypt pushing for a cease-fire, and Prime Minister Netanyahu was meeting with the British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond in Israel, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was meeting with Jordanian King Abdullah to present a list of Hamas and Palestinian Authority truce demands.
