Petition organizers say they have enough signatures to put gay rights ordinance to vote

An organizer of a petition drive to allow Lincoln voters to decide on a gay rights ordinance says the group has already collected more than enough signatures to put the issue to a vote.
However, supporters of a public vote on whether to extend civil rights protection to people based on their sexuality or gender identity learned Wednesday that the city attorney thinks their petition is flawed but wont say how.
David Bydalek, executive director of Family First Nebraska, said the groups circulating petitions already have enough signatures necessary to ask the Lincoln City Council to put the issue to a vote. The groups have until Tuesday to collect roughly 2,500 signatures. However, the groups are flummoxed by Mayor Chris Beutlers administrations refusal to say why the city attorney thinks the petition is drafted improperly.
Bydalek said supporters of the petition drive heard rumors that City Attorney Rod Confer saw some problem with the petition and contacted him about it. Confer confirmed that, and said hed get back to them about whether he could say what the problem is.
