2 Illinois county clerks receive permission to defend state's gay marriage ban in court

By Associated Press, Updated: Tuesday, July 3, 11:53 AM

CHICAGO — Two Illinois county clerks have received permission to defend the state’s gay marriage ban in court.

Effingham County Clerk Kerry Hirtzel and Tazewell County Clerk Christie Webb on Tuesday got the OK to intervene in the lawsuit filed in Cook County by 25 gay and lesbian couples. They stepped forward after Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan refused to defend the 16-year-old ban, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman.

The Thomas More Society is representing the clerks.

Good old Tazwell County. Home of Pekin (the county seat).

My boyfriend is from Pekin. A former "sundown town". They had a sign up that said "N--gers Out of Town by Sundown".

The high school mascot, until the '80s, was The Pekin Chinks. Rickshaw hats and all. Of course, my boyfriend's tea-bagging sister joined the vigorous protests to change the name. She also is against gay marriage even though she supposedly LOVES her brother and I.

Maybe an exception here or there - Urbana, maybe? The northwest corner?. But that's about it.

And I'm not really talking about overt racism or anti lgbtiq bigotry - though that exists too - it's just so DEAD there.

It's like like some weird Void exists down state.

If you don't make plans to get out of there - you just become like every body else - diminished some how - less alive & interesting.

Grew up in Central Illinois - family has farmed there since the 1840's.

Evertyhing I know about Peoria and Pekin, etc. I learned from them...none of it good. Just pititful these rubes are allowed to do this crap. What other group of people gets treated like this and then gets told those that are doing this shit to them actually "love" them?!

Separate but unequal.

Couples are trying to get REAL marriage, not the half-baked shit that civil unions are
