Gay marriage to be introduced in Scotland

Scotland could become the first part of the UK to introduce gay marriage after the SNP government announced plans to make the change.

Ministers confirmed they would bring forward a bill on the issue, indicating the earliest ceremonies could take place would be the start of 2015.

Political leaders, equality groups and gay rights campaigners welcomed the move.

But it has been strongly opposed by the Catholic Church and Church of Scotland.

All the main party leaders in Scotland support this, and it looks as though the vote in the parliament should go through easily. There's consultation going on for this in England and Wales too, but there are more Tory backbenchers there who may try to derail it.

i wonder if they have polls that tell them its time or if they are just doing what they feel is right regardless, would be a first for politicians. Though thy probuably figure that if they pass it people will be annoyed for about a week and then as usual just say oh well. Plus the soccer season starts soon so the masses will be distracted and forget politics for a while.

Lesbian politician Ruth Davidson elected leader of the Scottish Conservative Party

Ruth Davidson MSP has been elected as leader of the Scottish Conservative Party. Her election makes her the first openly lesbian or gay leader of a major British political party.

Ms Davidson was only elected as a member of the Scottish Parliament earlier this year and succeeds Annabel Goldie as the leader of the third largest party in the parliament.

If the most right wing of the major parties elected a lesbian as their leader, I think you can say the church and kirk's power over social matters is declining.

But not accepting of concepts. The best example of this is the general hatred of everything english but for the majority no hatred for individuals tbey know whk are english. Its a wierd love the sinner but hate the sin thing. The tory leader would have more problems for being a tory than eing a lesbian.
