SEATTLEThe Boy Scouts of America on Monday banned an openly gay Scoutmaster from the organization, saying its national policy barred gay adults from membership.
Geoff McGrath, 49, leader of Troop 98 in Seattles Rainier Beach neighborhood, is believed to be the first gay adult to be booted from the Boy Scouts of America since it held a controversial ballot last May allowing gay youthbut not adultsto participate in one of the countrys most popular youth organizations. The Scouts had severed ties with gay adults in previous years, before the vote to admit gay youth, but McGrath, an Eagle Scout, had been hoping for a different response in this new era of Scouting.
Its extremely disappointing to not be fully supported and defended in my membership, McGrath told NBC News. They are complaining that the problem [his status as an openly gay man] is a distraction to Scouting and they dont seem to understand that the distraction is self-inflicted.
The BSA confirmed that the organization has revoked McGraths membership.

The Boy Scouts of America has followed through on its ban against gay Scout leaders, booting a man it says deliberately injected his sexuality into scouting.
The Scouts on Monday removed Scoutmaster Geoff McGrath, 49, who is believed to be the first openly gay adult to be barred since last years ballot in which the Scouts voted to accept openly gay youth but not gay adult leaders, according to NBC News. McGrath told local news station KING 5 News that he was being profiled by NBC News this week when the news outlet posted on its website that his membership had been revoked information that was news to him, he said.
McGrath, an Eagle Scout who is married to his partner of 20 years, had filed an application for a new troop last year through Rainier Beach Methodist Church. He said Troop 98, in Seattles Rainier Beach neighborhood, was approved.
They were fully aware of my prior activism, McGrath told KING 5 News. The impact of discrimination has missed them somehow.
