Do we still need "LGBT Civil Rights and Activism (Group)"?

Last edited Tue Feb 21, 2012, 01:55 AM - Edit history (1)

This was broached in that group, but I am afraid many don't even know the group exists and Skinner is likely gun-shy baout deleting a group like that without a signal from this group. The group was created out of a need to have a very safe space in which our members couldn't be harrassed. However, with DU3, I think the group really no longer serves a purpose and could be given up.

What do you all think?

Edit...I am re-pinning this thread. We really do need imput before this can be brought to Skinner's attention. Please "yea" or "nay" the removal of said group.

Then I think it would be fine to delete the sub group (civil rights and activism) people could just file it under LGBT.

With the way DU3 is set up we can do that in this Group & be safe in knowing the Hosts can handle any unforeseen problems.

I could be wrong but wasn't that group set up on DU2 to make sure there was no controversy in that group?

There were quite a few of us who felt the GLBT group had been invaded by anti-gay/homophobic hostiles. That group was to allow us to discuss/fight amongst ourselves without getting sidetracked by homophobic attacks.

I'd think that if everyone unsubscribed it and didn't post in it, that the message would be gotten across. Barring that we could all pester Skinner.

IIRC, the main reason it was needed at DU2 was largely due to the functionality of that site. We needed a "safe" space to discuss our issues without distractions from others who were not as fully commited to our cause. The groups at DU2 allowed for that which was a nice advantage of having a separate "LGBT Civil Rights and Activism" group. The old GLBT forum at DU2 was not such a safe space.

With the powers that the hosts here at DU3 have, I think we are able to have such a space here in the LGBT group without the need for a second one. I would support removing the other group.

It's important that we get views from everyone on this and not let this thread sink.

... and probably sooner rather than later.

To me, now, it seems like a place for factionalism, I guess you could call it, to emerge.

I think LGBT is a terrific group, in part because there seems to be a real all-in-it-together kind of feel.

And, in a way, pretty much ALL of our conversations can be considered civil rights activism, on some level, considering the stage of societal development the world is at by and large.

So I guess I don't see much upside to having a separate forum apart from LGBT, but potential for downside.

There's no need to dilute the focus with two separate groups. How do we ask Admin to remove the old group?
