Chula Vista, CA declares Sept. 8 to be LGBTQ Day

At the August 7th, 2018 meeting of the Chula Vista Council, city officials presented a proclamation declaring Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, to be LGBTQ Day in the city. The date coincides with the annual South Bay Pride Art & Music Festival which will be held at Chula Vista’s Bayside Park.

This was the first time that Chula Vista, the second largest city in San Diego County, has approved a proclamation to declare an LGBTQ Day in the fast-growing city.

The proclamation, signed by Mayor Mary Salas, was co-presented by Chula Vista Councilmember Stephen C. Padilla, who represents the city’s 3rd council district. Padilla, who previously served as Mayor of Chula Vista, is noted for being the first openly LGBT person to serve or be elected to office in that city. He was also the first person of color ever elected to city office in Chula Vista history. On its website, the City of Chula Vista does have a list of LGBTQ Community Resources, including three staff members who serve as LGBTQ Community Liaisons.

South Bay Pride began in 2007 as a smaller community picnic called “Gay Day in South Bay” and has since grown to a much larger venue and encompasses many elements of other Pride festivals including entertainment, information booths, food, beverage gardens, and more. More information about South Bay Pride is here.
