222 – Julia Soaemias, Roman wife of Sextus Varius Marcellus (b. 180)

222 – Emperor Elagabalus is assassinated, along with his mother, Julia Soaemias, by the Praetorian Guard during a revolt. Their mutilated bodies are dragged through the streets of Rome before being thrown into the Tiber.

1198: Marie of France, Countess of Champagne died: daughter of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Louis VII of France; full sister of Alix, Countess of Blois

1708 – Queen Anne withholds Royal Assent from the Scottish Militia Bill, the last time a British monarch vetoes legislation.

1829: Sarah Dolley born: physician and woman suffrage activist

1850 - Woman's Medical College of Penn (1st female medical school)

1869: Beatrice Winser born: educator who opposed protective legislation for women

1872: Kathleen Clarice Groom born: writer
