'We lost our jobs for reporting being raped': Haunting photo essay depicts the suffering of women who were victims of sexual violence in the U.S. militaryPulitzer Prize finalist photo journalist Mary Calvert is revered for putting a spotlight on humanitarian issues that are ignored or that people are not aware of.
While her work - centered on women and children in crisis - has taken her all over the world, from the Democratic Republic of Congo to India, her latest assignment is much closer to home.
The former Washington Times photographer has compiled a photo essay that attempts to expose the widespread sexual harrassment of women in the American military that is going unreported.
Calvert says that an estimated 26,000 rapes and sexual assaults took place in the armed forces last year, however only one in seven victims reported their attacks.

(10,597 posts)... grades 7-12 should be given self-defense martial arts classes. They will be ready to face the world physically able to defend themselves, no matter where life leads them.
Protecting our young girls' requires empowering them. They shouldn't have to loose their innocence forcibly.

(10,597 posts)... if girls were taught martial arts as a phys ed class from 7-12, it would be a 2-for-1 hit for education: Physical Ed and Personal Safety.
How do you create support for this on a large scale? My girls are grown. One is a black belt in tae kwon do. However, I am concerned about my grand daughter.
... for your granddaughter, pay for her class. As for nationally, I say the first step would be to get a real Democrat as Education Director, not a Corporate type like Arne Duncan.

(11 posts)I'm a little older and not so sensitive about many things anymore. Have a bit of research to do, however, I am committed to helping out the next generation of young people, especially our girls. They deserve a fighting chance to reach their full potential.

(113,628 posts)do for a child's self-confidence--bullying in schools, for example, doesn't wait to start in grade 7.

(11 posts)Girls are pretty confident until they play their first game of boys against the girls in gym. Then, most of them give up physically. The top few don't and become fueled by it because they know they can compete strong in a fair fight.
