Anti-abortion "personhood" bill clears Oklahoma senate

OKLAHOMA CITY | Thu Feb 16, 2012 2:29am EST

OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - Oklahoma lawmakers edged closer toward trying to outlaw abortion on Wednesday by approving "personhood" legislation that gives individual rights to an embryo from the moment of conception.

The Republican-controlled state Senate voted 34-8 to pass the "Personhood Act" which defines the word person under state law to include unborn children from the moment of conception.

The measure now goes to the state House where pro-life Republicans outnumber Democrats by more than a 2-1 margin.

Oklahoma's Republican Governor Mary Fallin, who signed every anti-abortion bill sent to her last year, did not issue a reaction to the latest right-to-life measure.

I will say though, that in the Tulsa World article posted this morning ( it is subscription only) the comment section could have been written by DUers. There were over 100 comments and I didn't see one that supported this ridiculous legislation.

we are going to get the same up here in Kansas. It is going through committees now. It is the same here with each and every article. Almost every response is aghast at this but not surprised given the make up of the legislature and our state house. It is way past time for all these people to see and know what their R reps are doing. I think voting R is such a knee jerk reaction for them they don't think about it. We are over run with Teabaggers here but still the responses and the polling favor trashing this kind of bill. It would help if there was a Democratic Party in Kansas but what we have is weak, ineffective and scared to do more than say, "Oh yeah, that is a GREAT idea guys, we will vote for it too." Our only thoughtful, democratic minded legislators are moderate republicans. <-----think about that

of each and every fertilized egg in the state nor how how many $millions will be wasted in trying to 'convict' those women who miscarry and in fighting the lawsuits that will come.

Do women who have miscarriages get arrested for involuntary manslaughter? What if they didn't know they were pregnant yet? I guess any woman in her child bearing years is just considered pregnant until proven innocent? Will there be a special tribunal convened for women to report to each month when they start their menstrual cycle to ensure that they were not pregnant?
