Just want to share some good news, and say thanks.

A little less than a year ago, I posted here to say that my significant other had rather abruptly become legally blind at the age of 54-55, after having been self-employed for his/her whole life in highly visual work; and we had not yet saved enough to retire.

Many of you replied with supportive comments or helpful, practical advice.

This morning we got word that s/he's been approved for SSDI after our first appeal (his/her initial application was denied).

It's been an incredibly difficult year, as I'm sure you all can well imagine; and the difficulties are far from over. We've worked hard on all fronts – medical, legal, financial, practical, and emotional – with me struggling to keep my own work/career going; and we still have a long way to go.

But getting approved for SSDI is a big deal for us.

So I just wanted share the good news and thank you again for your support and helpful advice!

4. Let me guess:

A lawyer submitted the one approved. From what I've heard, they NEVER approve until a lawyer files. (Kind made me wonder when my wife had to go thru this years ago).

Sadly. We did the initial application, and the lawyer did next to nothing to earn their 25%-of-back-benefits-fee, but.

I guess, based on this, applicants who think they have a respectable claim should get a lawyer asap; otherwise, you're just giving away 25% of more.

I'm sad to hear about the denial, but so glad it was fixed. I hope in the future the disabled will be treated better. If we work together, we can make it happen. Good luck and best wishes.
