(20,886 posts)Hard to keep track of all the cardinals. Rodrigo's flat American accent bothered me at first, but I got used to it.
Still watching it, though.
But do explain the pine cone if you can. Pines of Rome maybe?

(26,613 posts)or for that small group to prostrate themselves a moment earlier (IIRC it was the scene when the naked cardinal arrived), but my guess is that it's people who can't go inside the Vatican directing unstructured worship at the buildings and grounds that contain the post - using the site as proxy for the holiness contained within...
On edit: Cool show, by the way, thanks for mentioning it! I was bothered by Rodrigo's accent (and demeanor) a bit at first too, until I realized that most of the dissonance was because I've been watching The Wire recently as well. Also, I noticed that a lot of the other accents, although European, are at least as wrong as Doman's.

As the for the giant pine cone - I've seen it in several scenes now - but never heard it mentioned.

I'm not much for historical dramas, but I thoroughly enjoyed this and Tudors.

That pine cone which much have been wondrous when a part of a working fountain, is a symbol of the Vatican and the pope himself -- Gods eyes on earth.
The pine cone is on the coat of arms of the Holy See and I would venture to say that that crown he wears is pine cone like. The pine cone has long history of representing the inner eye or third eye or Pineal gland or maybe even the Holy See. Check out this sight -- http://www.conesandstones.com/historical-symbolism.html
