Petty tattling, way to make us feel.like outsiders

We sublet in a utilitarian condo complex. We are mere renters vs owners. My SO is very gregarious and talks with the other tenants and knows their pets' names, etc. We are "part of the community" no, we are not.

So, the hoa head and his retired busybody minion hang out watching everything in the lot. Its like Gladys Kravitz x 2. SO talks to them like their buddies. I told him watch out. I'm not as trusting. So places glass ashtray on handrail on 2nd floor. It falls and breaks. Our bad. Were really careful about butts bc minion 2, whos lover smokes, complains about it. Ok fine.

Instead of walking up to our door and saying whoops, glass fell and broke can you clean it up? Me: omg sorry right away, this dude CALLS THE LEASING OFFICE to tattle on us over a tiny accident. They know we are home.

Its not easy getting a human at the leasing office. You really have to work at it. Like, youre really working at narcing on good neighbors over this crime against this community. Like, lets document this..lady from leasing calls me to tell me this. She sounds pissed, hopefully not at us. I apologize of course I'll clean it up. Minion 2 cleaned it. Ok i would have, but he insisted. I've been having a very hard time lately so maybe this bothers me more than it should.

This is like going to someones boss bc they forgot a sandwich in the work fridge. WTAF? I would never do this to a quiet neighbor over something dumb like this.

I'm done. I told SO watch out from these2 and they are not friends, keep quiet say hi move on, but he's still talking to them. Another neighbor backed into me and dented my car. I let it go

ETA I don't want to get kicked out of this semi affordable apt over bullshit

I used to own (read have a mortgage) a house. There was a local home owners' association. I did not join.

It's worse in condos. I'm sorry you have to deal with this.

I couldn't believe the trouble gone to to call the rental agency when a knock on the door would have fixed it in 15 seconds. Its like he wanted this crime on record

The term busy-body was coined for them. I saw one on Judge Judy who carried a gun.

To tell me he has some type of complex cancers, so he's been not in the lot with minion 2. Guess not worry so much about potholes, and ashtrays..

Btw, minion 2 has the cops out for his fights with his lover. But again he's an owner.

That particular community was mostly homeowner ccupied, except for a few units that were rented out by their individual owners. Some time back, the board had made a rule against owners renting out units. Those that were already occupied by renters got grandfathered in, but (unbeknownst to us) were resented by those who would have preferred not to have to share their precious community with riffraff renters like us.

I won't list all of the annoying things that happened while we were living there, because it would take too long, but they included a management office (paid by the board to handle general upkeep) that was staffed with incredibly rude people and a few neighbors who would call the office to complain about every little thing rather than talking directly to resented riffraff renters like us. It gradually became apparent that we renters were second class citizenst, and it was not a great feeling!

We stayed as long as we did because it was a genuinely nice place to live, on the whole, and because our landlord was a peach who took care of things that needed taking care off while otherwise leaving us alone and rarely increasing the rent.

When he died, his son wanted to put the unit on the market. He lived hundreds of miles away, and was not interested in being a landlord, which was entirely understandable. We were ready to go by then anyway, so we started looking for a new place and moved when our lease ran out.

We are much happier where we are now, in a large apartment complex where there isn't a two tiered class system of homeowners snd renters.

Unfortunately, this place has gotten too expensive for us, so we're.looking again. If not for the cost, we'd stay here indefinitely.

My SO is friendly with so many here, including a 90 yr old with a Walker in love with him, leaving him notes and candy. There seem to be a goodly amount of renters here. But yes, I def feel like theres a flavor of renters being a bit lower on the scale. These two seem the worst. Minion 2 lover seems to have a crush on my SO. So maybe there's some jealousy. But he calls the cops on ppl walking late at night. Has a garden that extends out, puts potted plants on the stairs in my way, of course I can't say anything. Anyway, former hoa leader is undergoing cancer treatment or something. I wished him well. It was creepy to constantly see the 2 of them together outside, talking about god knows what. We don't keep anything on the hand rail now.

called the Condo Nazis. They hated everyone who was not like them: upper middle class retired, and could afford to travel a lot, and golf daily. I was a lowly working stiff and drove a 10 year old car.
Fast forward to today, my hub and I downsized and now rent in a disabled accessible 2BR 2 BA apartment I love my renter neighbors and nobody cares who has more money or a new car. People look out for the less mobile folks and will offer to pick up groceries or run errands for them.

People can be such assholes. Little do they realize what neighborly friendship perks they miss out on, by being so nasty.

Take Care

"People suck. ALL people suck. But, a few of us realize that we all suck and try not to suck so badly." - David M.

Wisdom for the ages, as far as I am concerned.

I miss living in the neighborhoods I used to dwell in. Like in East Nashville, where we all knew each other and watched out for each other. If someone they did not recognize pulled into a driveway and the homeowner was not at home, there would be five neighbors over there checking things out. Not in a militant way, just asking if they needed anything and making sure those in the car knew they were being watched. We always helped each other out with anything. In fact, I have an example of how wonderful those neighbors were.

What a mess this was. Yet, we all pitched in. (Do not get me started on the complete lack of city or county aid in this matter. We saw one city pickup stop at the end of the street, look down towards us for about ten seconds, and then left. That was the only city/county presence we saw that day. Oh, except for the two trucks and a crew than arrived at the home of a high ranking deputy who lived about four blocks from us. He got his place cleaned up really nice by the grunts for Davidson County Sheriff's Department. They did not do anything for anyone else that day.)
