I've also gotten used to eating my last meal fairly early as well (really helps weight-loss and maintenance)--Like 3-4 PM on many days, so I'm fairly used to the "empty" feeling.

I only have anything later if the "pangs" are acute, which they often are not.

But peanut butter/almond butter/cashew butter have a lot of protein and can really cut the pangs.

A couple moderately heaping teaspoons (not spread on anything), consumed directly (and savored, which is important, IMO) and the hunger diminishes, within 10 minutes or so, almost like with a medicine.

That way, I only consume 100 to maybe 200 calories, tops, instead of eating something more substantial
and compromising any balance in my diet.

Works for me, anyway.

Just get the kind with no extra added ingredients, except maybe salt.

Peanut butter or almond butter might work too.


But if these are binge-foods for a person, then they are not necessarily a good choice.

just not a fan of nut butters.

A banana or a cheese stick/laughing cow cheese help too. Not too caloric before bed, but sate enough that the hunger pangs don't keep you from falling asleep.

I eat my dinner around 5:30-6... and go to sleep around 9, which works most nights. But if I'm up later, I tend to need a snack.

I'm fortunate in that I do not absorb 90% of the fats I consume so I can have butter on it.

I like grapes too.

I consider it one of my small meals. They are very good, have plenty of protein and aren't full of crap.

They list themselves as having something like 23 grams of carbs and 17 grams of fiber, leading you to think that of the 23 grams of carbs, 17 are fiber. What they really have, though, is 23 grams of carbs PLUS 17 grams of fiber. That's a lot of carbs. I figured it out after I noticed that Quest bars made my blood sugar skyrocket and did the math.

I've come to the conclusion that a glucose meter is your best friend for losing weight. Don't eat anything that makes your blood sugar go over 140 and you'll manage the insulin resistance that makes you hungry.

You really just sucked a whole lot of joy out of my life.... I'm not sure how you reached that conclusion though. Its not that clear on the label. I still read it as 4 g of net carbs.

Glad you mentioned it though....I was just about to order another couple of boxes. I will have to investigate further.

I will put my strong face on tho...If I can give up ice cream I can give up the quest bars if I have to. I haven't been having too much trouble with hunger lately but you are right about keeping those insulin levels stable.

Most manufacturers list fiber as part of the total carb count, but apparently they don't have to. I was tipped off when my blood sugar spiked after a Quest bar.

recommended by my previous nutritionist. Not too caloric, compared to some other protein bars.

(But I usually have one late morning, post gym, to tide me over until lunch time.)

They're a bit more honest about the "net carbs' and are also very low in sugar. I have to say their candy treats (thoughtfully packaged in portions) are delicious! They include M & M clones.

You have to have some fat with every meal because it turns off the hormone that increases appetite. My favorite snack is apple wedges with almond butter.
