What can I do with...

…a jar of sour cherries in syrup? They seemed like a good idea at the time, but I can’t really figure out how to use them. I thought at first they’d go well on ice cream, but they’re too, well, liquid—the syrup is more like juice.

Drain the cherries, add some tapioca, sugar, and almond flavoring to juice, combine with cherries. Fill pie crust, dot cherries with butter, add top crust, sprinkle top with sugar, and bake.

and let sit for a month or so to make an Eastern European style cherry brandy. Or cook them with a cinnamon stick, run through a food mill and add milk or cream or yogurt to make a sour cherry soup. Or use as a glaze for roast duck or pork roast. Or mix with soda water to make a sort of "Shirley Temple" - one of my favorite summer non-alcoholic drinks.

You can thicken the syrup either by reducing it or adding a thickener like corn starch, and use it on cakes, ice cream, pancakes, etc.
