Fried Cabbage and Noodles is the Most Underrated Jewish Food

What is haluski? The answer, like with many dishes, depends on who you’re asking.

Different varieties pop up across Eastern Europe, including Slovakia, Romania, Poland, and Ukraine, where it’s the national dish. The variations likely stem from the fact that haluski simply means “dumplings.” Just as there are many ways to make a kugel, there are many ways to make a dumpling dish.

... though my Romanian and Bulgarian friends made it for dinner parties.

We used a bit of bacon for the 'halushki', I made pirogi until I discovered Mrs T's. Still make Pogoc as my grandmother called it and a Georgian cheese bread boat I don't remember the name of. Halupka, still make it and stuffed peppers.

That part of the family came from Czechoslovakia and were farmers and coal miners. My grandfather was both in Nanty Glo, PA.

Thanks for bringing up great memories!
