Related: About this forumjewmas dinner was a bit ruined tonight
it was supposed to be latkes and crock pot brisket with garlic and onions. well....the power went out a few hours into the brisket and wasn't going to be on any time soon according to the power company, so we warmed up the grill, tossed everything into a pan and let it go.
unfortunately, i trusted my sister with the task. i told her it only needed to be around 250ish and when i finally went out to look, it was at 350 and had been for more than an hour. the onions turned into carbon and, obviously, no jus. it goes without saying that we couldn't do the latkes, so we wound up eating slightly dry brisket by the light of a kerosene latern. it really was a good day outside of that, but i was so excite about our dinner. we're going back tomorrow for revenge latkes even though i have no desire to leave the house.

Will send you my brisket recipe when I find it, not that you need it but just for the heck of it.
P.S., watching Julie & Julie on OWN.

(24,146 posts)and it's the best thing i've eaten today. our food just didn't work out today. not only did dinner not work out, but breakfast didn't come out as planned. sister made (gf) baked pancakes and they tasted ok, but they didn't puff and were really dense.
i hope you got something decent to eat before bed. look forward to the recipe!

(130,973 posts)dining-wise! And I'm still watching Julie & Julia, with NO chance to have anything decent to eat before bed, but may visit little, new French patisserie near here when I wake!

(24,146 posts)we used to have a great french bakery in town but it shut down about five years ago.

(130,973 posts)I wouldn't call it a 'great french bakery,' but its cute, comfortable, new, and the people who run it are nice. May bring a treat to my daughter Julie, her husband and BABY (who won't quite appreciate it yet, as he's only 5 months old) on Saturday when I visit them on the way back to the cottage.
Brought my brother to the bakery when he visited a few weeks ago; he has similar fine taste as did our Dad, and he enjoyed it; we ate the baguette in the car! And when we arrived at the cottage he began to cook, using my copy of Mastering the Art of French Cooking! Made a mess of the kitchen, but made Julia's Soupe a l'Oignon!!! Très délicieux!

(35,685 posts)for both of you. I think you are both entitled to go out of your way to make up for it today. Maybe you will change your mind about going out, fizzgig, as the day goes on.
"Revenge latkes!"
I read your experience, too, elleng. I also looked at the gallery section of Patisserie Manuel's page. What an artiste'!

(24,146 posts)it's cold and the roads are messy, but dad and sister really want latkes, so we'll go do latkes. whine, whine, whine
i'm just glad we didn't have something like beef wellington in the oven last night. i'm glad they were able to save that.

fizzgig
(24,146 posts)and we'll head over there after husband is done with work. i really don't have the motivation to do over there, but the food will be worth it.

(146,218 posts)Fortunately, I have every thing we could possible need. Taking the dinghy into town does not appeal to me in the least today.

(24,146 posts)i'm a week into my vacation and i've left the house every day, which certainly was not on the agenda, so i'm hunkering down tomorrow before i go back out on sunday.

I hope you have the loveliest of days tomorrow.
