Pirate Sells Treasures From Trader Joe’s to Canadians

VANCOUVER—The shelves are stocked floor-to-ceiling with trademark Trader Joe’s food items, cheeky chalkboard wisdom greets customers at the entrance and the sign outside trumpets the name in familiar red lettering in front of a nautical mural featuring a tin of sardines and a sea turtle.

But this is no Trader Joe’s—it is Pirate Joe’s.

The Vancouver-based retailer trades on part of the name and all of the quirky reputation of the giant U.S. grocer. Pirate Joe’s advertises itself as an unaffiliated and unauthorized reseller of “contraband” merchandise imported from the U.S., everything from cheddar-and-horseradish-flavored potato chips to organic hummus dip.

It even sells bottles of Trader Joe’s maple syrup, filled with a product that originates in Canada.

Amusing story. Good pics at the link.

He had a vision but hasn't gotten caught up with the making of piles of money yet.

Slightly off topic but it all makes me think of when I used to work in Atlanta - and LOVED the cozy setting and great food at a local place called Longhorn's steak. Why did they ruin it to chain out across the country? Our local Longhorn's is NOTHING like the original place.

old picture - except this article.

I don't think it looked anything like they do today. Was on Peachtree.

Just remember the salmon - which they still have on the menu. Marinated in bourbon and brown sugar - which I have made many times over the years - but supposedly there is another secret ingredient.

Does Atlanta still have a lot of great restaurants? Gee - wish I could remember half of the places we ate - one had the most delicious honeyed biscuits and crab cakes that were literally 99% crab meat.

The one I was thinking of was closer to mid-town and was called 7 Steers, and there was a large steer out front. I remember eating there in the 1960s or early 70s. They had the best mushroom gravy.
