Oh, and skillet Corn Bread, which doesn't really bring good luck, but I'm cooking it because it's just so darned delicious

(16,104 posts)Black-eyed peas for good luck (never heard 'coins'). With raw onion for flavor. Yuck.
Collard greens for money.
Cornbread ('cause it tastes good - I never heard 'gold' but THAT is good!)
We did hog jowls once for more money, but we couldn't get past the whiskers, so we switched to pork!
We been doing THIS meal all my life, way over half a century! If nothing else, it teaches 'hopeful persistence'?
We might try 'Hoppin' John' style - couldn't hurt!

(2,674 posts)I always serve black-eyed peas on New Years and usually with rice, but I don't mix them. Gotta have a mess of collard greens and a bottle of Louisiana hot sauce and a bottle of sporting peppers to shake on everything. Bring on a plate of corn bread, some green onions and you have good Southern eats, You can forget about the meat, although I must say, I usually have a platter of fried chicken, too. Already looking forward to the New Year's meal.

(14,889 posts)One of my favorites is Black Eyed Pea Soup. I couldn't wait so I made it last week! It was relish.
Here's my menu for New Year's Day.
Glazed pork chops (Pork is considered a sign of prosperity in some cultures because pigs root forward. This is probably the reason many Southern New Year's Day dishes contain pork or ham.)
Mixed green salad with pomegranate seeds, feta and pecans. (Greens resemble money, specifically folding money. Make dishes using boiled cabbage or sauerkraut, collard greens, kale, chard, mustard greens, turnip greens or other green, leafy vegetables to ensure good fortune for the coming year.) (Pomegranates represent good luck for many reasons: Their red color, which represents the human heart, denotes life and fertility; their medicinal properties represent health; and their abundant, round seeds represent prosperity all things everyone hopes for in any fresh start.)
Fried cabbage bacon, onion and garlic. (Cabbage is considered the king of good fortune)
Cornbread (Symbolizes gold)
With all of the above "good luck food", 2018 will be a banner year for me! Hahahahahaha!!
