What's for Dinner, Sat., June 9, 2018

We're going to dinner at the home of friends tonight. She's a fabulous cook and way ahead of her time in the cooking world. Didn't tell us what she's serving tonight, though. I plan a fast trip to my garden so I can take some fresh produce (lettuces, Swiss chard, etc.) with me.

For lunch, however, the RG went to the Polish deli near the town we used to live in. It was fun to enjoy the items we used to get frequently (and now hardly ever). There were sausages, pate, sliced ham, breaded chicken, ham loaf, and numerous side dishes. One was something like sauerkraut but it was a salad. Imagine sauerkraut with shredded carrots.

Then for dessert, blintzes and some cranberry/nut pastries.

Lots of grape tomatoes, garlic, Kalamata Olives, spinach and fresh dill in the mix. And, of course, Feta Cheese. Strawberry Shortcake for 'afters'.

Not sure what were having, but they suggested I bring red wine, so that's a vague clue!

spatchcocked and marinated in yogurt, lemon, sumac, dill, and shallots, to be roasted. A chopped salad with cucumber and tomato and onion. A strawberry jello (poke) cake for dessert. The cake used three egg whites, so we'll have some hollandaise with broccoli from this morning's farmers market.

whom my daughter recently 'discovered.'

Served Baby crab cakes, Maryland country ham biscuits, small turkey and tuna sandwiches, guacamole with pita chips, vege crudites, broccoli salad, potato salad, fresh fruit assortment, cup cakes, and lemon cake.

Does that ever sound good! I love little sandwiches; sometimes I fill a plastic container with them and munch on them when the RG is gone on a trip, like he is today, and just do nibbles throughout the day instead of a regular meal. And the crab cakes and country ham biscuits--umm!

Speaking of "discovered" family, I have a friend whose daughter and family were dining one evening when they received a knock on the door. This family lives in the Midwest. It was a man who introduced himself as a brother to the daughter's husband. He had been doing genealogy research and discovered his brother. The two became very close.

Soon the two brothers spent so much time together that my friend's daughter wished something like this would happen to her. She began research on whether it was possible. I said to my friend that I thought this was a little far-fetched. My friend thought so, too. I mean, really, why would you think you might have a long-lost sibling from another mother--just because this happened to your husband?

Imagine our surprise when she actually did turn up a sister. The sister lives in the Princeton area of NJ and the two fly halfway across the country to see each other several times a year and they talk regularly on the phone. They are the best of friends and share everything with each other!

My daughter just received an inquiry from a relative of my GRANDFATHER, who may have met me shortly after I was born but I didn't really know him. Have pics from Dad, and showed them off to this 'new' family. Looks like we'll make more connections! (Too bad this woman lives in California, and we're in MD!)

Yes, I'm planning to munch on leftovers today! Only 2 little crabcakes left, but a few tuna and chix sandwiches, and lots of fruit. And guac! AND muffins and bagels, as the crowd had to leave today too early to make it back here for brunch, so it'll be mine for a WHILE!
