What's for Dinner, Sat., Sept. 1, 2018

Steak, salad, 3 vegetable side dishes and mango-berry topped custard for dessert.

The salad is endive, carrot, onion, and tomato, all chopped and served with vinaigrette.

The steak is NY strip, bone-in, but it's sliced for serving. Pan fried in cast iron skillet.

For vegetables, the RG did something rather unusual that I've never seen done before: radishes, sauteed. They were sliced and when sauteed, they curled up. They were delicious this way! Slightly sweet, so I wonder if he added a touch of mirin to them.

Also, filet green beans served with cashew nut sauce and toasted pignolis.

Zucchini, thinly sliced, and sauteed with onion and garlic. Served both as a vegetable side dish and as a garnish on the steak.

For dessert, mango and blueberries on top of custard.

To drink, pomegranate juice mixed with a little prosecco. Sparkling water.

my grandfather used to grow them. He'd pull them straight out of the ground, rinse off the dirt, slather them in butter and black pepper, and eat them straightaway. I remember him preparing them for us kids, too and they were delish.

This is how he prepared them: sauteed in butter, added vinegar and a tsp of sugar (in our case agave). So your grandfather's method and this one have butter in common.

I know a lot of people like a radish sandwich and use butter as the spread on the bread or cracker.

We're trying to clear out the freezer and we found a steak and a boneless chicken breast. They're marinating before they get grilled for fajitas.

There was a batch of frozen guacamole that we made a couple of months ago and I found a can of refried beans in the pantry. Chips and the usual sides of tomatoes, lettuce, onions, jalapeños etc.

Vanilla ice cream for dessert.

a nice green salad with cucumber, carrot strips, and tomato wedges, shrimp and cocktail sauce, deviled eggs, and spinach-cheese puff pastry pinwheels.
