Related: About this forumLast night a Pyrex glass dish exploded in a closed cabinet into hundreds of tiny shards.
It was at room temperature and alone on a shelf.
Has this happened to anyone else?

(1,104 posts)A couple months ago, while sleepwalking, my hubby put one on the stove and turned it on....it exploded.....

(17,303 posts)but not at room temperature.
Also, it seems that the newer "Pyrex" or imitations are more prone to this happening (made over the past several years). Older dishes seem to hold up better.
How old was your dish?

(2,748 posts)There are two layers of glass and the inside one exploded. A lot of glass blew through the vents above and below the door (its a Kitchenaid convection wall oven) and ended up on the floor . I had just passed in front of it.
My son who was visiting said he thought it was caused by the pan inside touching the glass. The oven was on.
But that is bizarre that your room temp dish exploded!

(3,647 posts)I've never had Pyrex explode but I've had two toilet tanks fracture and break apart. Most ceramics shrink as they are fired in a kiln. It's inevitable that stresses will be created during the firing process. Over the years micro fractures will occur and these can join into larger fractures until... Kaboom. I can't say that Pyrex glass does the same thing, however. Just my observation.

Really, that's the kind of story that makes it easy to believe weird stuff.

(6,133 posts)My wife travels a lot and has worked in South Korea.
I FaceTimed her once and got this Chinese/ Korean looking guy. I immediately hung up, (remember that one does not type the phone number but presses wife).
I got him again. He was walking through an airport with what looked like Chinese banner writing above his head. I said, what are you doing with my wifes phone? He shook his head and said what? He hung up.
It turned up that my wife was fine and had her phone.
I talked to several people about it and they never heard of such a thing.

(6,133 posts)But remember what I said. It blew up on its own. I heard the muffled crash, and looked around, but there was nothing on the counters. It was buried in a corner cabinet which is low inside with another pull out covering it.
It was at room temperature with no stress and it blew up. That is like spontaneous combustion, but different. It happened.

(2,534 posts)I opened a cabinet door to find my small glass measuring cup had turned into a small pile of glass shards.
I didn't hear anything, so I don't know exactly when it happened.

(6,133 posts)Everything was clean. The dish was tucked back in and muffled by a complex fold out system.
I look at the couple of glass measuring cups, many, oh so many bowls, and a few baking dishes any Im concerned.
About 15 years ago I did a stupid thing. I took a shortcut and put a glass dish on a burner to melt butter. I turned around to the opposite counter and then boom.
There was hot glass shards in the vinyl floor.
The kitchen can be dangerous if you dont know what youre doing. I remember 25 years ago when I lost control of a chefs knife which stuck point down into the floor right next to my bare foot.
