38. Parsley is the herb from the leaves. Cumin comes from the seed
A spice is a seed, fruit, root, bark, or other plant substance primarily used for flavoring, coloring or preserving food. Spices are distinguished from herbs, which are the leaves, flowers, or stems of plants used for flavoring or as a garnish. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spice |

To some of us, cilantro tastes bad.
Some people can roll their tongue. (Can you?) It's genetic. Some can raise the right side of their upper lip and lower the left side of their lower lip in a really terrific sneer. (Can you?) It's genetic. |

20. It's not the cilantro; Blame it on your genes!
Love it or hate it, some people possess a gene that makes them very sensitive to a chemical component in the popular herb cilantro.
Your genes are out of whack, so you can't help but hate the smell and taste of cilantro. I love the stuff and use it almost every savory recipe, my SIL has the bad gene and she swears it tastes like soap. Google the details. |

32. Apparently crushing it is supposed to reduce the soapy smell
Most people either don't smell anything soapy about it, or find it a mild or not unpleasant smell.
For those who it find it too soapy-smelling, crushing it releases enzymes that break down the aldehydes that create the soapy smell. Personally, I really like cilantro, but mrs. unblock hates it. |
