Cumin is the dried seed of the herb Cuminum cyminum, a member of the parsley family.

38. Parsley is the herb from the leaves. Cumin comes from the seed

A spice is a seed, fruit, root, bark, or other plant substance primarily used for flavoring, coloring or preserving food. Spices are distinguished from herbs, which are the leaves, flowers, or stems of plants used for flavoring or as a garnish.

you simply have to avoid it. It's like someone with a peanut allergy having to avoid peanut products, there's no reason to make them illegal for people who have no such problem.

For you, it can't be wonderful, and that's OK.

17. OK, guys. You probably know this, but it's genetic.

To some of us, cilantro tastes bad.

Some people can roll their tongue.
(Can you?)
It's genetic.

Some can raise the right side of their upper lip and lower the left side of their lower lip in a really terrific sneer.
(Can you?)
It's genetic.

20. It's not the cilantro; Blame it on your genes!

Love it or hate it, some people possess a gene that makes them very sensitive to a chemical component in the popular herb cilantro.

Your genes are out of whack, so you can't help but hate the smell and taste of cilantro. I love the stuff and use it almost every savory recipe, my SIL has the bad gene and she swears it tastes like soap.

Google the details.

32. Apparently crushing it is supposed to reduce the soapy smell

Most people either don't smell anything soapy about it, or find it a mild or not unpleasant smell.

For those who it find it too soapy-smelling, crushing it releases enzymes that break down the aldehydes that create the soapy smell.

Personally, I really like cilantro, but mrs. unblock hates it.

33. Why Genetics May Be The Reason You Hate Cilantro

I knew I saw something about this!!

[link:https://www.forbes.com/sites/lesliewu/2018/02/28/why-genetics-may-be-the-reason-you-hate-cilantro/#46fb36145206|]

Does the sight of cilantro in a dish make you shudder? Do you find an automatic reaching for the salt shaker as a de rigueur element to your dining experience?

There may be a scientific reason for your palate quirks that go beyond a matter of taste and deep into your genetic makeup.

Master of Wine Tim Hanni has a lot to say on the subject. A certified wine educator and former chef, Hanni had a 35 year career in the hospitality business, cooking and consulting, as well as working for Beringer Wine Estates.(and its new owners Fosterís Wine Estates) as director of international developments for 15 years. Now, Hanni studies the scientific elements of taste and senses with university researchers.

day my taste buds said "hey, wait a minute..." I had some sort of epiphany and my taste buds awoke to the joy of cilantro. I think it must have been that fresh mango salsa. But I don't even remember when/where. I do remember that I hated it, and then I loved it.

Mexican food (and lots of other types) would be totally bland without it. Salsa without cilantro is not worth eating. I love the stuff! 23nme says I have "slightly higher" odds of disliking it, but apparently is not true in my case.
