When you buy a package of mixed greens in the grocery store that says Washed and Ready to Enjoy ... do you still rinse them off before serving?

(22,201 posts)I would wash it again, heavily (under the cold water tap, for quite a bit of time, and then shake off pretty good)...

(2,674 posts)I read Michael Pollin's book about supermarket food and won't buy the mixed greens anymore. I buy a head of some type of lettuce, maybe more than one type. Wash it very well, wash again, drain upside down in a big colander What I don't use, I wrap in paper towels and put in a plastic bag and store in fridge. will keep 3-4 days.

(22,201 posts)precautions that we all do. I didn't read the book but I'll bookmark and if lucky, will pick up at the library and read if they have it. Thanks for the heads up on the book. Palin's got so many books out there.

I only rinse produce that has obvious dirt on it. like all the freaking celery lately. what the hell is up with that?

(4,668 posts)I did until seeing one of our local investigative newswomen do a segment on pre-washed salads. Its throughly washed before packaging. None of the restaurants Ive worked at wash it, either.

(32,168 posts)and Ive been served salads in restaurants with greens in them I would have thrown away if I were making them at home.
You can tell when a restaurant serves you a salad that came out of a bag and I always wondered if they wash those,too ...now I know!

But I usually buy greens as close to whole as possible. Which I also wash thoroughly.

(111,437 posts)because of the sulfites used to retard spoilage set off my IBS and the results are doubleplus ungood.
Most of the time, I buy greens separately. I tend to like them one at a time, anyway.
