Taking on an acid-stain project...

OK..so I got lots of good suggestions from DUer's about hardwood flooring; and now, after seeing how well the slab is cleaning up I've decided to go with an acid-stain.

Not a great photo, but the slab wasn't horrible after just removing carpet and pad:

It is cleaning up very well after only a very cursory attack with warm water and scrub brush:

I'm clearing out the rooms as I go move forward, crating up all the non-furniture stuff and pulling the carpets. Once I get all the carpets and padding out I'll move the furniture to the garage and go at the slab with a buffer with abrasive pad to thoroughly clean it.

There are divots in the slab around the margins where the tack strips were fastened. My plan is to top up the divots with Durham's Water Putty and then float a polymerized topping cement in a six-inch strip around the margin, in order to create a solid strip which should look like an inset border after the stain is applied (hopefully...)

Anyone had any experience with this?
