Future was orange for seagull that fell into vat of curry - until rescuers cleaned him up

A seagull turned bright orange after he plunged into a vat of chicken tikka masala in Wales. And smelled amazing, apparently.

The bird fell in to a container of the food while trying to scavenge a piece of meat from a food factory bin on Monday.

He was rescued by workers at the site, in Wales, and picked up by a volunteer for Vale Wildlife Hospital near Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire.

Staff at the centre used washing up liquid on the seagull to remove the bright orange from his feathers.

They managed to return him back to his original white colour but have not been able to wash away the smell of curry.

Seagulls get into food factories? How does that happen? nt valerief Jun 2016 #1
It was a vat of wasted curry they had set outside. They may want to rethink that. Judi Lynn Jun 2016 #2
I see. Thanks. nt valerief Jun 2016 #4

. . .

“He was just a bit embarrassed,” Lucy, of Tewkesbury’s Vale Wildlife Hospital, said.

“He does not like spicy food any more. The vat was outside and normally covered because it was waste, but for some reason it was not.

“We think he was fishing out chicken and fell in. He would normally have been able to take off from water but the curry was too thick and gloopy.

“He would have drowned had they not found him in there.”

The bird has been recovering since he was plucked from danger on Monday.

(The video at the link shows he's still a little orangey on his white feathers!)
He will remain with the charity until the natural oils in his feathers have recovered.

“He was easy to clean because he had not been in there long so the turmeric had not had time to stain the feathers too badly,” Lucy said.

But she insisted she did not taste Gullfrazie.

“When he came in you wanted to feel sorry and concerned but he was making everyone’s belly rumble,” Lucy said.

“It was the weirdest thing we have dealt with here.”
