(111,255 posts)is to get the poor thing a buzz cut when it starts to get really warm and shedding its its peak. Even with a Furminator, the poor cats mat within minutes of being brushed and brushing them can be pretty miserable. It's best to get that winter coat buzzed off for the summer.
My irascible old tomcat hated getting the cut but he loved it once all that hair was gone, bouncing off the walls with extra energy and soliciting body pets he could actually feel. He looked pretty pathetic, though, there wasn't much cat under there.

(948 posts)I have a Norwegian forest Cat.
Her coat is pure evil. Pure unadulterated evil.
Poor thing just mats and mats. WE use a dethatcher brush on her once a week. You're left with a pile of fine cottony hair that is about 2 times the size of the cat...no shit.
We started shaving her and she loves it. At first, she would kick and scream and try to bolt, but now she just lays there, purring away until we're done - I think she figured out that this makes her feel much better.

(111,255 posts)which contributed to his irascibility. One shave a year did the trick, best of all worlds. He was a chenille kitty in summer, then in fall his winter coat would start to grow out and he'd be soft beyond belief. Springtime was pure misery until the shave.
I didn't know that about Norwegians. I'd always thought their coats were like the Maine Coon coat, low maintenance unless the cat was molting heavily in spring.
