Related: About this forumMy dog has been horribly sick the last 15 hours
He's a middle aged Boston Terrier. He threw up last night around midnight and can't keep anything down. He drinks voraciously then throws up about 20 minutes later. Shaking, shivering, whimpering, red bloodshot eyes, and looking just generally in a sad sad state. Definitely no spunk left in him.
He threw up about 9+ times throughout the night and was in to see the vet this morning. Took some tests and gave him anti nausea shot... but he still throws up after drinking anything. He's looking pretty weak right now having a hard time even rolling over. The most we've able to surmise is that there were pieces of leaves in his puke. All I can think is he ate something poisonous - but the blood tests won't be back until tomorrow.

(102,276 posts)Get thee to a veterinary clinic that is prepared to offer more intensive care. This may be less reflective of a simple gastritis and more consistent with more serious pancreatitis or other organ dysfunction for which iv fluid therapy is really paramount.
Good luck with your little one.

(544 posts)they said he was not dehydrated. And he is drinking a TON... he's also throwing up a ton too though. I'm out of clean blankets and towels now.
Vet said just keep giving him as much water as he wants and letting him throw up - at least until the tests come back so they can see organ functions.

(102,276 posts)a few hours to become so. If he has become progressively depressed/lethargic/less responsive, he needs to be seen again.

(19,808 posts)his kidneys almost shut down and he needed a week of fluids and treatment.

We never let him out again.

(12,608 posts)some years ago both my dogs had it. They got it from a stray who came into my yard. One survived the other didn't.

(544 posts)He has a lot of spunk and energy. He was 100% fine all day yesterday. Completely normal. He spent about 15 minutes acing uneasy and then just started puking everywhere. The couch, the floor, on the bed, my glasses, my pillow, under the bed (3 times), the carpeted hallway (3 times)...

(11,686 posts)I wish I could remember what it was called but there is a very serious illness they can get from eating some type of compost. It does the same thing. It can kill them. the difference about the one I am talking about is that they have diarrhea that blasts out ( I do not know how to describe it. ) I have some friends who had animals that that happened to. The two dogs survived but the cat died. I really hope this dog survives whatever it may have.

(522 posts)If so, he isn't dehydrated, at least not dangerously so. If he isn't you need to go back to see the vet. His symptoms are similar to my dog when she had pancreatitis several times last summer. She is about the same age as your furbaby. Vet says fat in diet is frequent cause, especially in that age group.
Good luck

(4,516 posts)EXPLOSIVE vomiting, limp as a dishrag, nothing staying down. The vet gave 2 IVs one, 500cc of saline, the other a mixture of steroids, vitamins, antibiotics and anti nausea meds. He diagnosed it as a bacterial stomach infection and wanted me to call again this morning. She hasn't thrown up again, she is drinking normally now but not eating much. He told me if she wasn't eating at least 1/2 of her normal intake by tomorrow to come back again.
You didn't mention the color of your dogs gums (should be bright pink) but you might want to keep an eye on that as well. White/grey/blue gums is a sign that the dog is going into shock and you should get them to a vet ASAP.
If you believe your dog ate something poisonous you should collect a sample of the vomit, including the leaf and take it to your vet.
Lord knows, I can sympathize with your situation, I hope both our babies are zooming around the house again soon.

(4,516 posts)She's older than the OP dog with an underlying medical condition, I don't expect her to bounce back as fast. She's still sleeping more than usual and seemed unsteady on her feet this morning when she woke up. But she had a good couple of walks today and spent some time lying in the sun. She's alert, drinking and eliminating normally, but not interested in much, especially food. She's eating a little, but not up to begging for her favorites or playing with her buddy the cat.
Its great the OPs dog is doing better!

(4,516 posts)she ate her first full meal in 5 days last night and this morning I caught her sneaking into the cats room to steal food.

(205,345 posts)The "limp as a dish rag" description sounded just like him. The vet determined it was coccidia, said he must have picked it up by ingesting vegetation outside that contained bird poop. He rallied pretty quickly after they gave him meds, but it was very scary at the time. Hope your dog is okay soon too...

(22,073 posts)Find another vet. Quickly.
Sometimes dogs will eat things that will make them throw up, grass, leaves, whatever. Is there anything around your house he could have gotten into? Chocolate, grapes, onions, tobacco?

(28,120 posts)He will die without enough liquids. This is VERY seriously.

(28,120 posts)And, btw, if you changed vets, the new one can get the test results from the first one. You've already paid for that test, so those results are yours.
I worry that your furkid is dehydrating and that his kidneys are having to deal with some deadly toxin. He may need IVs and the sooner, the better.
Thinking about your pup and wishing him the best.

(205,345 posts)Which took them awhile to diagnose, sweated it out in the exam room for what seemed forever for them to run tests. Since he ate some vegetation, please ask if it could be coccidia (cock-sid-e-uh), sure won't hurt to ask. My dog was still a puppy so he was in the kitchen overnights (housebreaking) and in the morning the floor was covered with vomit and diarrhea and he was very weak and limp, poor little guy. I was alarmed enough that I took him straight to the vet. Please let us know how your dog is doing...

(544 posts)Last night he was having a hard time even rolling over or picking his head up... He stopped trying to eat or drink altogether (which also stopped him from vomiting). I honestly thought he was going to be finished. We were about 30 minutes from taking him BACK to the vets lest night and he hopped up and was begging for food and to go outside. I could tell he was still pretty weak but he definitely had some spunk back. This morning he seemed almost all alright - smiling and kissing everyone.
I think he just ate some bad plant or something outside and it took him almost a day to get over it. My neighbor and I have a large garden between our house and there are several of the plants I read up on that are bad for dogs. Could've been anything.
Thanks for all the well-wishes and advice!

(16,334 posts)as you can see from my post, these pups can get into anything and everything! Short of keeping them in a pen, I'm not sure there's anything we can do. Glad yours is okay!!

(32,974 posts)Angel Alex would & did try to eat anything. We spent time @ the vets or vet er, a lot over those 12 yrs. When Alex was still puking, my vet told me one ice cube, 3 teaspoons of water till he hadn't vomited for 2 hrs. Did your vet say something similar about limiting food/water?
JoeStuckInOH
(544 posts)To avoid dehydration.
I should send the vet the cleaning bill(s).
