Surf dogs compete at World Championships in US

More than 50 dogs have taken part in the annual Surf Dog competition in California.

The competitors took part in heats based on their weight, and were critiqued on their board skills by a panel of professional judges.

Organisers say money collected at the event will go to the San Diego Humane Society and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

We have four dogs, all from animal shelters. The Santa Cruz Mountain bred-to-hunt-pigs dog loves all sports. I've no doubt I could teach her to surf.

Our oddest dog is the husky. He understands many sports, but he's never going to chase a tennis ball or catch a Frisbee and he hates water. His specialty is filling our house with hair and looking at me with expressions of "You want me to do what? No, I'll pass. Can't you see I'm taking a nap?" I'm sure he'd be a fine sled dog, but I don't have a sled and there's no snow here.
