(28,817 posts)It grows wild all over the place at our house. Friends come and harvest it every year.

(9,825 posts)Then I tie a knot in the sock (or two--three if it's a knee sock.) Makes the best cat toy. Mine love them, esp. after the catnip has dried out and esp. after it has been drooled on by all the other cats. Then it becomes a real prize!

(15,805 posts)Just take an orphaned sock and put a few spoonfuls of good catnip in the toe area. Cut off about a 1 inch strip from the top of the sock and cut that piece open, then use it to tie off the toe containing the catnip so it is a tight ball. Cut the upper section of the sock into long strips so that your new catnip toy resembles an octopus.
My kitties love playing with these things. They get dragged around the house, tossed, chewed and clawed, but they are indestructible.

(32,974 posts)It is too cold to grow catnip outside, let alone the fact the feral neighbors would eat it. If I grow it inside, these 2 young & vigorous cats will break any pots within minutes. Dixie has been trying to climb up the living room blinds. Shaw likes to climb the book shelf. The grocery store available nip seems kind of pricey for a small amount. This is why I asked.
