The eyes are just starting to open, not all of them, and sometimes a pup may have only 1 eye open.

(21,716 posts)Daddy? Your guess is a good as mine, we just don't know. I ask Daisy all the time who the daddy is, but she chooses not to answer. She was a stray and went into the shelter pregnant.

Hope mama is doing well.

(21,716 posts)The whole litter died. They had Canine Herpes Virus, which is something they get from the mom in the birth canal. They were all a bit congested, which isn't unusual for young pups, but 1 was losing a bit of weight instead of gaining weight. We took them into the vet when a second one lost weight. They checked them all out, and weren't concerned. I brought them all home, and they started passing away the next morning. They went to the vet on a Tuesday, first one died on Wednesday morning, they had all died by Saturday. They were in intensive care at the vet.
I had never heard of Canine Herpes Virus before, but if you google it, it is the most common cause of death in young pups. I am just devastated. There was nothing I could have done, and they came to me with it. But it is still hard.
We had to keep Daisy's milk just in case any of them came back, so it was another week before we let her lose her milk. Daisy is doing fine now. She spent 2 nights in bed with me after the pups left, but since then, she sleeps in my room on a dog bed. And she is drying up now.
This is part of rescue, but it totally sucks. It hurts that it was the entire litter, they had barely started to open their eyes.

(28,120 posts)I'm sure sweet, grieving Daisy will be neutered once she's well enough.
I had never heard of this either. Now I have some reading to do on Canine Herpes Virus.
Hugs to you and Daisy. What an awful ordeal you both have shared.
Thank you for letting us know.

(21,716 posts)By the time we got the necropsy result back from the first pups, it was already too late for the others. They suspected that as what it was, but there was nothing to be done to save the rest

Hugs and thanks again, M.
Btw, our Missy girl (from one of M's former puppies litters, folks) is going great! She'll be 3yo in April.
